NORFOLK, Va. – The No. 74 Wisconsin women’s tennis team opened the 2011 dual season with a 6-1 win over unranked Old Dominion on Saturday, in Norfolk, Va.

The Badgers lost just one match on the day, and head coach Brian Fleishman is extremely pleased with the way his players performed.

“This was a great start to our season,” Fleishman said. “I have never seen our girls play this well since I’ve been coaching here.”

Wisconsin started two freshmen, Nicky Stracar at the No. 1 singles spot and Jenny Hois at the No. 3 spot.

Stracar took on Joanna Dobrowolska at the No. 1 spot. Stracar dropped the first set 3-6, but came back to take a close second set 7-5 and the third set 1-0 (10-3).

Hois earned the Badgers’ most dominant win of the day, defeating Melissa Esnal Olguin in straight 6-0, 6-0 sets.

“We couldn’t have expected more out of our two freshmen,” Fleishman said. “They don’t even look like freshmen. They are handling themselves professionally, and we expect great things from them.”

Sophomore Hannah Berner gained another win for Wisconsin with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Juliana Pires.

At No. 5 singles, junior Aleksandra Markovic claimed a 6-3, 6-3 win over Nika Khmolovska.

Senior Jessica Seyferth capped off the day for UW with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Margarita Belvakova at No. 6 singles.

At No. 2 singles, redshirt junior Alaina Trgovich faced Diana Ivanova. Trgovich won the first set 6-3, but lost the next two sets 4-6, 4-6.

The Badgers went undefeated in doubles play, sweeping the competition in all three matches.

Stracar and Trgovich easily defeated Old Dominion’s Dobrowolska and Esnal Olguin, 8-3, in the No.1 doubles slot.

UW’s toughest win came at No. 2 doubles where junior Angela Chupa and Hois narrowly defeated Nika Khmolovska and Diana Ivanova, 8-7 (7-3).

Berner and Seyferth also won their double match, 8-4, over Juliana Pires and Belvakova.

The Badgers return to action tomorrow at 9 a.m. (CT) when they take on No. 56 William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va.
