MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - With the absence of two starters at 149 and 165 lbs., the No. 3 Wisconsin wrestling team fell to No. 4 Minnesota, 21-15, in a match that came down to the final bout on Sunday.

The Badgers are now 0-1-1 in Big Ten Conference action after recording five decisions against the Gophers at the Sports Pavilion.

 Fast Facts
• Gophers record three wins by bonus points
• Badgers finish with five wins by decision
• No. 2 Brandvold returns to lineup for first time since November

Wisconsin (9-2-1, 0-1-1 Big Ten) trailed 18-15 heading into the heavyweight match, but Wisconsin's No. 11 Eric Bugenhagen dropped a tough, 3-2 decision to Minnesota's Ben Berhow. Bugenhagen finished the match with two escapes, but Berlow notched a takedown and an escape in the final period to record the victory.

The Badgers' individual successes were led by Tyler Graff (133 lbs.) and Kalvin York's (157 lbs.) efforts in the first half of the dual. Their victories were followed by three-straight wins by No. 19 Ben Jordan (174 lbs.), No. 3 Travis Rutt (184 lbs.) and No. 2 Trevor Brandvold (197 lbs.), who returned to the mat for the first time since November.

The Cardinal and White trailed for nearly the entire dual, as the Gophers (12-3-0, 3-0-0 Big Ten) were able to score bonus points in at 141, 149 and 165 lbs. However, at 141 lbs., freshman Shane McQuade was wrestling at two weight classes higher than usual, after competing at 125 lbs. prior to Sunday's match. In addition, at 165 lbs., freshman Ben Cox made his first career start, filling the absence of injured teammate, No. 2-ranked Andrew Howe.

In a hard-fought battle, redshirt sophomore Tom Kelliher dropped an 11-8 decision to No. 5 Zach Sanders. Kelliher trailed 9-7 heading into the third period, but decreased his deficit to 9-8 with an escape to begin the final frame. Sanders notched a takedown in the final seconds, however, to give Minnesota a 3-0 advantage over Wisconsin to begin the dual.

No. 3 Graff tied the score at 3-3 with the Badgers' first victory of the afternoon. Buoyed by three takedowns, Graff defeated Minnesota's David Thorn, 9-4.

Minnesota took the lead back at 9-3 when No. 2 Mike Thorn pinned McQuade at 141 lbs. Wisconsin's redshirt sophomore Shawn Perry then dropped a 12-3 major decision to Minnesota's Daniel Zilverberg at 149 lbs.

With back-to-back Minnesota victories recorded by bonus points at 141 and 149 lbs., Wisconsin redshirt freshman Kalvin York faced Minnesota's Joe Grygelko at 157 lbs. Holding Grygelko to zero points in the final period, York sealed the win with an escape and takedown in the third frame to decrease Wisconsin's deficit to 13-6.

Minnesota took an 18-6 lead over Wisconsin when Cody Yohn recorded a 15-0 technical fall over Wisconsin's Cox at 3:27, but Jordan, Rutt and Brandvold recorded three-straight decisions for the Badgers' to come within three points heading into the final match.

Wisconsin now trails the all-time border battle series, 36-57-1. This season, the Badgers are 1-1 with Minnesota after defeating the Gophers, 19-17, to earn third-place at the NWCA Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa, Jan. 9.

UW continues Big Ten action as it hosts two duals at home next weekend. The Badgers square off against Michigan on Friday at 7 p.m. and take on Purdue at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Both events are set to take place at the UW Field House.
