Badgers grab two wins in home opener

MADISON, Wis. – The No. 74 Wisconsin women’s tennis team opened its home campaign with a pair of 7-0 wins over Green Bay and Northern Illinois at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium Sunday afternoon. 

The Badgers won every doubles and singles match in their first home dual meets of the season. 

Wisconsin’s singles victories included two 6-0, 6-0 shutouts by redshirt junior Alaina Trgovich and senior Jessica Seyferth against Green Bay. Sophomore Hannah Berner also notched a shutout victory against her Huskie opponent.

At No. 1 singles, freshman Nicky Stracar dropped just six total games in Wisconsin’s first home duals. She defeated Green Bay’s Emily Lawent 6-1, 6-4, and Northern Illinois’ Martina Schapp 6-1, 6-0.

Freshman Jenny Hois put together an impressive day at the No. 2 singles spot for UW, grabbing a 6-4, 6-0 win over Green Bay’s Morgan Weuve and prevented Northern Illinois’ Emily Rogers from winning a single game.

Trgovich also won all of her matches at the No. 3 spot, clinching victories over Green Bay’s Jennifer Bradfield, 6-0, 6-0, and Northern Illinois’ Kelly Phillips, 6-1, 6-3.

Atop her 6-0, 6-0 win against Northern Illinois’ Sarah McLaughlin, Berner also defeated Green Bay’s Maria Anderson, 6-0, 6-3, allowing just three games against her.

UW’s No. 5 singles player, Seyferth, won her first match against Green Bay’s Rebecca Nelson, but had to fight back against Northern Illinois’ Haley Dekkinga after dropping the first set, 4-6. Seyferth won the following set 6-2 and the tiebreaker 1-0 (10-2).

Freshman Caroline Bauer competed at No. 6 singles against Green Bay, earning a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Julia Kedrzyski. She also played in an exhibition match against Northern Illinois’ Rebecca Hansmann where she defeated her opponent, 6-0, 6-0.

Sophomore Lauren Gruber also represented the Badgers in the No. 6 singles match against Northern Illinois, defeating Ilse Pacheco in straight 6-1, 6-1 sets.

UW swept doubles play against Green Bay and Northern Illinois with a pair of 8-1 wins by freshman Nicky Stracar and Trgovich, two 8-2 victories by sophomore Hannah Berner and Seyferth, and No. 3 doubles wins from freshman Caroline Bauer and sophomore Lauren Gruber, and junior Angela Chupa and Hois.

The Badgers return to the court on Saturday, Feb. 5, when they take on Evansville and Illinois-Chicago at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
