EAST LANSING, Mich. - A 10-minute scoring drought doomed the Wisconsin women's basketball team as the Badgers fell at No. 11 Michigan State 62-43 on Thursday evening. The loss ended the Badgers five-game winning streak as the Spartans handed the UW its first Big Ten Conference loss of the season.

 Fast Facts
• Badgers lose first Big Ten game of the season
Alyssa Karel leads all scorers with 16 points
• UW turns the ball over only 10 times

"We didn't shoot it well and we couldn't get anything going inside," said UW coach Lisa Stone. "Credit Michigan State's defense, they really pressured us outside. We didn't turn it over, we just took some ill-advised shots"

Wisconsin (7-8 overall, 2-1 Big Ten) was playing without starting post player Lin Zastrow, who suffered a head injury during Tuesday's practice. Without Zastrow in the middle, Michigan State scored 38 points in the paint and outrebounded the Badgers 45-21.

After trailing 4-0, the Badgers went on a 12-2 run to take a 12-6 lead with 12:25 to play in the first half. UW upped its lead to 20-10 with 6:09 to go off layin by Tara Steinbauer, but that would be the last points Wisconsin would score until the 16:08 mark in the second half.

"We shot just 29 percent (7-of-24) in the first half," explained Stone. "When we're not making shots, it's going to be hard to hold on to that lead. ... what happened was because we weren't scoring, defensively we broke down.

"(Michigan State) upped their pressure; they really, really upped their pressure on the perimeter. They realized we were without Lin Zastrow on the inside and they got all over our guards on the perimeter."

The Spartans (14-1, 2-0) outscored the Badgers 21-4 to start the second half, taking a 42-24 lead with 12:34 to play.

"That second half, they got whatever they wanted to," said Stone of MSU. "They manhandled us in the second half. On the offensive end, they just picked us apart and got whatever they wanted.

"Michigan State is too good of a team but we didn't finish the half off well and that carried over to the second half. We couldn't get any offense going."

Alyssa Karel led all scorers with 16 points, shooting 5-of-13 from the field. Tara Steinbauer added 10 points for the Badgers.

The Spartans had four players score in double digits as Porsche Poole and Kalisha Keane each scored 12 points. Keane had a double-double as she was one of two MSU players with double-figure rebounds. Lykendra Johnson led all players with 12 boards.

Michigan State shot 48.1 percent (25-of-52) from the field, including 57.1 percent (16-of-28) in the second half. Wisconsin shot a season-low 32.6 percent (15-of-46) for the game.

The Badgers turned the ball over only 10 times, the second-lowest for the UW this season, and went to the line 20 times, but made just 11 (55 percent).

"It wasn't just shooting, it wasn't just defense, it wasn't just rebounding, it was the whole thing in the second half," said Stone.

The Spartans extended their home winning streak to 15 straight and this season's winning streak to 12 games in a row.

Wisconsin returns home to host Minnesota (8-8, 0-3) on Sunday in the Kohl Center. Game time is 3 p.m.
