
Wanland leaves for PanAm Games

MADISON, Wis. - Wisconsin women's swimming and diving senior Ashley Wanland takes off for Guadalajara , Mexico on Tuesday to compete in the 2011 Pan American Games held Oct. 15-30.
This summer, the senior was one of 48 swimmers selected to represent the United States in the 2011 PanAm Games. She will be competing in the 100-meter breaststroke.
This is Wanland's third international competition this year. During the summer, Wanland earned fourth place in the 100 breast with a time of 1:08.33 at the 2011 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships. She also swam at the World University Games in China, where she took seventh place, touching the wall in 2:28.90 and earning her first top-eight finish in international competition.
Wanland leaves shortly after the Wisconsin women's team won their first meet of the season against Milwaukee on Friday, Oct. 7. Wanland finished first in her three events; the 400 medley relay, the 100 breast, and the 200 breast and heads to the PanAm Games undefeated.
Held every four years, the Pan American Games are the second-largest multi-sport event behind the summer Olympics. The swimmers participating this year were chosen based on their performances at the 2011 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships. Chuck Batchelor will lead the women's team as head coach.
