MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin wrestling team (5-1) suffered its first loss of the season to Hofstra in Long Island, N.Y., on Sunday. The Pride defeated the Badgers by a 25-12 margin, but the Badgers claimed three individual matches, including a pin by redshirt freshman Frank Cousins (174 lbs.).

The dual began at 125 lbs. where No. 14 Steve Bonanno opened the dual with a tech fall win over junior Shane McQuade. The victory gave Hofstra a 5-0 lead over UW. McQuade now has 3-3 record on the season.

Hofstra then took an 8-0 lead with a 4-3 overtime decision by Jamie Franco over redshirt junior Tom Kelliher. The loss gives Kelliher a 4-2 record this year.

Redshirt freshman Thomas Glenn then fell to Luke Vaith by a 15-0 tech fall to give Hofstra a 13-0 lead. Glenn is now 1-3 on the season.

No. 13 redshirt junior Cole Schmitt earned Wisconsin’s first win of the day with a 7-2 decision over Justin Accordino. The win narrowed Hostra’s lead to 13-3. Schmitt remains undefeated with a 5-0 record.

Hostra then came back with its fourth win of the dual at 157 lbs. with a 3-0 decision over redshirt sophomore Shawn Perry by Tyler Banks. The loss was Perry’s second of the season.

At 165 lbs., No. 16 Ben Jordan dropped his first match of the season to No. 5 Paul Gillespie by a 3-1 decision. Gillespie’s victory gave Hofstra a 19-3 lead. Jordan has a 5-1 record this season.

Wisconsin closed the deficit at 174 lbs. where Cousins defeated Jermaine John by pin at 5:53. The fall narrowed the Pride lead to 19-9 and gives Cousins a 4-2 record on the season.

Redshirt freshman Timmy McCall then lost his first bout of the season to No. 20 Ben Clymer at 184 lbs. Clymer’s 2-0 decision gave Hofstra a 21-9 lead over UW. McCall has a 5-1 record this year.

The Badgers claimed their third victory of the day at 197 lbs. where redshirt sophomore Jackson Hein defeated Matt Loew by an 11-6 decision. The win closed the gap to 21-12, but clinched the dual win for the Pride. Hein is now 5-1 on the season at 197 lbs.

In the final match of the day, redshirt sophomore Cole Tobin fell to Paul Snyder by a 5-2 decision at heavyweight. This is Tobin’s first loss of the season and gave Hofstra a 25-12 dual victory.

The Badgers take a week off to prepare for the Cliff Keen Invite in Las Vegas, Nev., on Dec. 2-3.
