Badgers drop second match of the season

MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women's tennis team (4-2) dropped its second match o f the season, falling to No. 13 Notre Dame (4-4) on Sunday. The Fighting Irish defeated the Badgers, 6-1, winning all but the No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles matches.

Senior Jessica Seyferth led Wisconsin as she won both her singles and doubles matches against Notre Dame. She defeated JoHanna Manningham, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 6 singles. Seyferth joins freshmen Nicky Stracar and Jenny Hois to lead the team at 5-1 in singles play this season.

Stracar and Hois both suffered their first singles losses of the season. At No. 1 singles, Stracar fell to No. 9 Kristy Frilling, dropping straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Meanwhile, Hois also suffered her first singles loss this season, falling to No. 104 Shannon Matthews. Hois lost in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.

Sophomore Hannah Berner competed for the first time this year at No. 3 singles. She lost 6-3, 6-2 to No. 79 Kristen Rafael.

Redshirt junior Alaina Trgovich played in the No. 4 singles spot for the first time this season, facing No. 106 Jennifer Kellner and falling 6-1, 6-0.

Junior Angela Chupa also lost her match to Julie Sabacinski by a 6-1, 6-4 score at No. 5 singles.

Notre Dame earned the doubles point, winning two out of the three doubles matches. Seyferth and Berner were the only UW pair to win a doubles match, defeating Manningham and Rafael, 8-5, at No. 3 doubles.

Stracar and Trgovich lost just their second No. 1 doubles match of the year to Frilling and Mathews, 8-2. Hois and Chupa also lost their No. 2 doubles match to Kellner and Sabacinski, 8-5.

The Badgers return to Nielsen Tennis Stadium next weekend to take on Western Illinois and Milwaukee in a doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 20.
