AUSTIN, Texas--After beating Missouri State 9-2 earlier Saturday, Wisconsin was hoping to come out swinging strong once again to move on to the championship of the Texas Invitational, but the Bears (2-2) had other plans for the Badgers (3-2).
Despite Meghan McIntosh's career high seven strikeouts and Stephanie Peace going 3-for-3 with a home run, triple and double, Missouri State prevailed with a 6-2 victory.
Fast Facts | McIntosh records career high seven strikeouts | Peace hits first HR of career; adds triple and double | Badgers match season high with four errors in loss | |
Missouri State's Natalie Rose did her job well, keeping UW's hitters off balance with her arsenal of pitches.
Missouri State started things off offensively in the first and added another run in the third.
With runners on first and second and two out, Ashley Knehans drilled a line drive RBI single to center field.
In the third, Caitlin Chapin kept MSU's run streak going as she drilled a hit into left field for a single. McIntosh threw a wild pitch to Knehans, which allowed Chapin to move over to second. After Knehaus drew a walk Lauren Eisenreich hit a single to Shannel Blackshear at third. Blackshear almost tagged the runner but the ball popped free and all runners were safe. Pinch hitter Stevie Pierce entered the batter's box with the bases loaded and drew a walk to give MSU the 2-0 lead.
After the Badgers recorded no hits through the first two innings, they were able to record back-to-back hits to start the third.
With her leadoff hit to start the bottom of the third, Peace crushed the first home run of her career to left field. Dana Rasmussen followed up Peace's effort, sending a single through the left side for her first hit of the year. Rasmussen was then forced out at second as Kendall Grimm slapped one to third. A Jennifer Krueger line drive to shortstop Kirstin Cutter would end the Badgers' threat, as Cutter threw back to first to double off Grimm.
The Rams put another run on the board to start off the top of the fifth as Wisconsin's defense came up short.
After four innings of work by McIntosh, Cassandra Darrah came in for the first relief appearance of her career. With two outs and runners on the corners, pinch hitter Heather Duckworth's grounder to Karla Powell at first hit the bag and went over her head for an RBI double, giving MSU a 3-1 lead.
Missouri State capitalized on three Wisconsin errors in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 5-1, before adding a sixth and final run in the seventh.
Wisconsin got one run back in the seventh.
Jordan Skinner started off the inning pinch hitting for Ashley Hanewich and, on the first pitch, Skinner hit one up the middle for a single. Peace came up big once again for the Badgers as she drilled an RBI triple to the gap in right center to make it 6-2.
Wisconsin wraps up the Texas Invitational Sunday morning when it plays Colorado State for third place at 10 a.m.
