MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women’s tennis team earned two wins at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on Sunday. The Badgers defeated Western Illinois, 7-0, and Milwaukee, 6-1. UW is off to one of its best starts in school history with a 6-2 record in the 2011 spring season.
Head coach Brian Fleishman started eight different players in the two matches, all of whom earned a win for Wisconsin.
The Badgers won six matches without giving up a single game and surrendered only three games to the Leathernecks in all of singles play.
Junior Lauren Gruber won both of their singles matches, 6-0, 6-0, while juniors Angela Chupa and Aleksandra Markovic, sophomore Hannah Berner and freshman Caroline Bauer each won one singles match by the same score.
Markovic also had a perfect first set against Western Illinois’ Jill Furlong. She did not lose a point until the third game of the second set.
With two wins at No. 2 singles, freshman Jenny Hois extended her singles record to a team-best 6-1.
Against Milwaukee, Wisconsin swept all three doubles matches and won all but one singles match. Freshman Nicky Stracar suffered her second loss of the year to Milwaukee’s Maddy Soule, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 1 position.
Stracar and junior Alaina Trgovich won both of their No. 1 doubles matches, 8-2. The duo of Chupa and Hois also won both of their doubles matches at No. 2, 8-2. Berner and senior Jessica Seyferth won both of their doubles matches at No. 3, 8-1.
The Badgers return to Nielsen Tennis Stadium on Wednesday to take on Marquette on Kids Day. The women’s match is set for 5 p.m. (CT) as the second match of a doubleheader with the UW men’s tennis team, which takes on UIC at 3:30 p.m. (CT) Wednesday.
