MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women’s tennis team extended its record to 7-2 with a 6-1 victory over Marquette at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on Wednesday night. Despite the dominant win, four of the six singles matches went into the third set.
The Badgers lost just one doubles match and one singles match to the Golden Eagles.
At No. 2 singles, freshman Jenny Hois extended her team-best record to 7-1 on the season with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Olga Fischer.
After losing the first set to Kelly Barry at No. 1 singles, 6-3, freshman Nicky Stracar rallied back to win the next two sets, 6-0, 6-3.
Redshirt junior Alaina Trgovich also came back after losing her first set, 6-4, to defeat Gillian Hush at No. 3 singles in straight sets, 6-0, 7-5.
Senior Jessica Seyferth finished her No. 6 singles match against Chelsea Utting about an hour before the next one completed. Seyferth defeated Utting, 6-0, 6-2, extending her season record to 7-1.
Sophomore Hannah Berner also went to three sets against Paola Calderon at No. 4 singles. Berner took the first set, 6-3, but lost the following one, 6-4. Berner then came back to win the third set, 6-3.
Junior Aleksandra Markovic lost the only singles match of the day after winning her first set, 6-1. Markovic lost the following sets, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) in a match that featured over 10 ties.
UW won the doubles point with wins by Hois and Chupa at No. 2 doubles, and Berner and Seyferth at No. 3. The duo of Stracar and Trgovich dropped a tight 8-7 (3) decision in their doubles match.
The Badgers take a week off from competition before traveling to Minneapolis, Minn., to take on Minnesota in their first Big Ten Conference match of the season on Friday, March 4.
