MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 6 Wisconsin wrestling team (9-3-1) suffered its third dual loss of the season and second defeat in Big Ten Conference competition to No. 13 Michigan (10-2-0). The Badgers grabbed three individual victories, but fell to the Wolverines, 26-9.

No. 3 redshirt sophomore Tyler Graff (133 lbs.) and No. 3 junior Travis Rutt (184 lbs.) both earned their 22nd victories of the season, while No. 2 redshirt senior Trevor Brandvold (197 lbs.) extended his undefeated streak to 6-0. The last time Graff and Rutt dropped a match was exactly two months ago.
Wisconsin was without two highly touted wrestlers, redshirt sophomore Cole Schmitt (149 lbs.) and junior Andrew Howe (165 lbs.). Despite their absences, UW garnered two wins over ranked opponents, which was counteracted by two losses by ranked Badger wrestlers.
The dual began at 174 lbs., where No. 12 Ben Jordan took on Justin Zeerip. After a scoreless first period, Zeerip scored an escape immediately after the start of the second period. Jordan earned himself an escape in the third period, but Zeerip's 1:25 of riding time gave him a 2-1 decision. Zeerip's win gave Michigan a 3-0 lead over UW.
Rutt then faced Hunter Collins at 184 lbs. Rutt registered a takedown six seconds into competition and held on to the lead for the remainder of the match. Rutt scored two takedowns, an escape and riding time in the 6-3 decision that tied the overall score at three apiece.
Wisconsin grabbed its second straight victory and only lead of the night when Brandvold defeated No. 10 Anthony Biondo by a 4-1 decision. Brandvold recorded a takedown, an escape and 2:09 of riding time to give the Badgers a 6-3 lead.
At heavyweight, No. 11 redshirt senior Eric Bugenhagen fell to No. 10 Ben Apland by a 5-2 decision. Bugenhagen scored two escapes in the bout, but was unable to take down his opponent. Apland's victory tied the dual at 6-6.
Redshirt sophomore Tom Kelliher then wrestled Sean Boyle in a close battle at 125 lbs. After a scoreless first period, Boyle reversed Kelliher 22 seconds in the period, followed by an escape. Kelliher began the third period down, but was unable to escape, leading to 2:31 of riding time for Boyle. The win gave the Wolverines a 9-6 lead over the Badgers.
Graff then tied the matchup again, 9-9, defeating No. 19 Zac Stevens in an 8-5 decision. Graff scored two takedowns, a reversal, an escape and 2:08 of riding time in his 22nd win of the season.
Michigan regained the lead, 13-9, with a 10-2 major decision by No. 1 Kellen Russell over freshman Shane McQuade. McQuade only allowed Russell one takedown in the first period, but gave up three additional takedowns, an escape and 3:40 of riding time throughout the match.
At 149 lbs., redshirt freshman Shawn Perry fell to Eric Grajales in an 11-3 major decision. Perry registered three escapes, but Grajales dominated Perry on the mat, scoring three takedowns, four nearfall points and 4:20 of riding time. Grajales' win extended Michigan's lead to 17-9.
The Wolverines then grabbed their third-straight victory when redshirt freshman Kalvin York was pinned by No. 20 Brandon Zeerip. Prior to the fall, York scored four escapes and trailed Zeerip by a 9-4 score. The pin gave Michigan a 23-9 lead over Wisconsin.
Freshman Ben Cox then took on No. 19 Dan Yates at 165 lbs. to close out the dual. Cox was unable to score, allowing Yates to score two takedowns, an escape and 4:08 of riding time in a 6-0 decision. The final score of the matchup was 26-9.
Wisconsin returns to the mat Sunday to take on No. 24 Purdue at the UW Field House at 1 p.m.
