Badgers put out the Flames, 6-1

MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 74 Wisconsin women’s tennis team (4-1) grabbed its third-consecutive win of the season over Illinois Chicago (2-2) at Nielsen Tennis Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 5. The Badgers defeated the Flames 6-1, dropping just one singles match.

True freshman Nicky Stracar extended her undefeated streak at No. 1 singles to 5-0 with a win over Mariya Kovaleva. Stracar won the match, 6-3, 6-2, handing Koveleva her first loss of the season.

Jenny Hois also remains undefeated in singles play this season, leading the team with a 5-0 record competing at No. 2 singles. She began both sets with considerable leads, 3-0 in the first and 5-1 in the second, but was pushed by Teona Tsertvadze in both sets. Hois, whose doubles and singles matches were both last to finish, ultimately defeated Tsertvadze, 7-6, 7-5.

At No. 3 singles, redshirt junior Alaina Trgovich won her third-straight match since making the switch from the No. 2 spot. Trgovich defeated Ilinca Cristescu, 6-2, 6-4, to put her season record at 3-2.

Sophomore Hannah Berner represented UW for the fifth time this season at the No. 4 singles spot. Berner defeated Jana Knoppe, 6-2, 6-2, extending her record to 4-1.

Angela Chupa made her first singles start of the 2011 season at the No. 5 spot as the junior faced off against Kathryn Sharples. Chupa proved successful in her first start, winning straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.

Senior Jessica Seyferth dropped her first singles match of the 2011 season to Linda Hricistova at No. 6 singles. Hricistova won the first set, 6-3, but Seyferth came back to win the second set, 6-4. In the tiebreaker, Hricistova never lost the lead, grabbing a 10-5 victory to win the match, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5).

Wisconsin earned the doubles point, going undefeated in all three doubles matches.

Stracar and Trgovich finished first, defeating Kovaleva and Tsertvadze, 8-2, in the No. 1 doubles spot. Stracar and Trgovich extend their doubles record this season to 4-1 with the win. Their only loss came against William & Mary in Wisconsin’s second match of the year.

Berner and Seyferth represented UW at the No. 3 doubles spot where they grabbed an 8-1 victory over Sharples and Hricistova. Berner and Seyferth have yet to lose a doubles match at either No. 2 or No. 3 this season.

Wisconsin’s toughest double match came at the No. 2 spot where Hoise and Chupa took on Cristescu and Knoppe. The Badgers seized an early 5-2 lead, but UIC rallied back to grab two straight games, bringing the Flames within three games. UW proved victorious, closing out the match with a final game that included six deuces and three UIC advatages.

The Badgers take a short break from home play, as they head to South Bend, Ind. to take on No. 12 Notre Dame on Sunday, Feb. 13 at 10 a.m.
