SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Stranded runners and unearned runs cost the University of Wisconsin softball team in its 9-0, five-inning loss to San Diego at the Gaucho Classic on Friday afternoon.
The Badgers (5-6) left the bases loaded in both the first and second innings, while the Toreros (7-5) scored eight runs in the fourth inning to break the game wide open. Only three of the eight runs in the inning were earned.

Things looked promising early on for UW as Jennifer Krueger led off the game with an infield single, extending her hitting streak to 14 games. That ties Julie Borchard for the second-longest hitting streak in school history. Borchard accomplished the feat twice, first in 1996 then again in 1998.
Following her single, Krueger stole second before Mary Massei struck out and Karla Powell walked. Shannel Blackshear followed with another walk to load the bases, but the Badgers were unable to drive in the runners. Stephanie Peace was out an infield fly to second base for the second out, while Kendall Grimm grounded out to end the threat.
After surviving a bases-loaded scare of their own in the bottom of the first, the Badgers loaded the bases again in the second.
Ashley Hanewich led off with a double to left center and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Dana Rasmussen. Whitney Massey drew a walk to put runners on the corners before Krueger struck out and Massei loaded the bases by getting hit by a pitch. Powell came up with the bases full but struck out looking after a lengthy at-bat.
The Toreros got on the board in the third thanks to an RBI single before breaking the game open in the fourth. San Diego scored eight runs in the frame, but only three were earned after Peace committed a fielding error with two outs.
