Final Stats

MADISON, Wis. – Senior Jessica Seyferth used a three-set win at No. 4 singles to clinch the match and propel the Wisconsin women’s tennis team (13-10, 4-5 Big Ten) to its second-straight Big Ten Conference win. The Badgers defeated Iowa, 4-3, on the outdoor courts at Nielsen Tennis Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The dual came down to the final match between Seyferth and Iowa’s Christina Harazin at No. 4 singles. After splitting the first two sets, Harazin took the momentum into the third set with a 6-4 win in the second. However, Seyferth pulled out a 6-4 victory in the third to win the match and clinch the victory for the Badgers.

In addition to Seyferth’s win, the Badgers received singles victories from freshman Nicky Stracar and junior Angela Chupa, who competed in her first singles match since March 5 against Nebraska.

UW jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

The duo of sophomore Hannah Berner and Seyferth won its 17th doubles match of the season, defeating Alexis Dorr and Harazin, 8-5, at No. 2 doubles.

Juniors Aleksandra Markovic and Chupa also earned a win for Wisconsin with an 8-4 victory over Ally Majercik and Lynne Poggensee-Wei.

Stracar teamed with redshirt junior Alaina Trgovich at No. 1 doubles. The pair nearly defeated No. 35-ranked Sonja Molnar and Jessica Young in a tiebreaker, but the Iowa duo clinched the 8-7 victory with an 11-9 tiebreak score.

In singles play, the Hawkeyes quickly tied the match at 1-1 with a decisive 6-2, 6-2 win by No. 110 Molnar over Trgovich at No. 1 singles.

The Badgers then went down 3-1 with two more two-set wins by the Hawkeyes. Markovic fell to Alexis Dorr and Berner then lost to Poggensee-Wei, 6-3, 6-1, in consecutive matches.

Stracar brought the Badgers within one point of the overall score with a tough win against Young at No. 2 singles. Stracar won the first set, 6-1, but then dropped the second 3-6. She then captured a 6-3 victory in the third set in her first appearance at No. 2 singles since March 26.

Chupa faced a similar situation, winning her first set, 6-3, over Cassandra Escobar at No. 6 singles but falling in the second set, 3-6. She then came back to tie the overall score at three apiece with a 6-0 victory in the third set.

Seyferth’s victory at No. 4 singles then sealed the win for the Badgers.
