MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women’s tennis team (11-8, 2-3 Big Ten) lost to Indiana in a close 4-3 loss in Bloomington, Ind., Saturday afternoon. The Badgers won two of three doubles matches and two of six singles matches.
UW earned the doubles point, claiming two of three doubles matches.
At No. 2 doubles, Sophomore Hannah Berner and senior Jessica Seyferth grabbed a close 9-7 victory over Evgeniya Vertesheva and Kayla Fujimoto, while junior Aleksandra Markovic and freshman Nicky Stracar won their match against Katya Zapadalova and Sophie Garre at No. 3 doubles, 8-4.
The Badgers’ only doubles loss came at the hands of No. 31 Leslie Hureau and Myriam Sopel. Freshman Jenny Hois and redshirt junior Alaina Trgovich fell to the ranked duo, 8-4.
At No.2 singles, Trgovich fell to Vertesheva in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Trgovich is now 2-3 in Big Ten play this season.
Hois then lost to No. 78 Hureau at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-3. Hureau was the third-straight ranked player Hois has faced, and she is now 1-3 against ranked opponents this year.
Seyferth also lost her match at No. 5 singles to Fujimoto, 7-5, 6-1. Seyferth currently holds a 1-4 record against Big Ten Conference opponents this season.
Berner was the next to fall at No. 4 singles against Charlotte Martin. Martin won in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-1, to clinch the win over Wisconsin.
Stracar won the first singles match for UW. After losing the first set, 6-4, Stracar earned the victory when Zapadalova retired. The score was 1-3 in favor of the IU player prior to retiring.
Markovic then won her match at No. 6 singles over Sopel. Markovic won 6-3, 6-1, in her second Big Ten win of the season.
The Badgers face Purdue tomorrow at 11 a.m. (CT) in West Lafayette, Ind.
