MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin softball team was unable to finish off the doubleheader sweep of Northwestern on Saturday at Goodman Diamond, falling 2-0 in game two after winning game one, 9-8.

The Badgers (20-15, 2-4 Big Ten) were only able to get three hits off Northwestern (19-10, 1-3 Big Ten) starter Sammy Albanese. The Wildcats scored once in the second and third innings to back Albanese.

 Fast Facts
• Badgers manage three hits in loss
• McIntosh gives up zero runs in 4.1 innings of relief
• UW suffers eighth shutout of season

Marisa Bast got the scoring started in the second inning for Northwestern as she led off with a walk and took second as Kelly Quinn grounded out to first base. Jordan Wheeler then drove home Bast with a single to put NU up, 1-0.

Wisconsin got two quick outs in the third inning, but the Wildcats loaded the bases with a pair of two-out walks from Adrienne Monka and Michelle Batts. Bast then singled through the right side to load the bases. Quinn then drew the bases-loaded walk, the fifth free pass issued by UW starter Amanda Najdek on the day, to make it 2-0. Meghan McIntosh came on in relief of Najdek and got Wheeler to fly out to end the threat.

After surviving another bases-loaded situation in the fourth, the Badgers put up their first scoring chance in the bottom of the inning.

Stephanie Peace led off with a double to left field. Karla Powell struck out but the ball got away from catcher Lauren Ackerman, forcing a throw to first. Peace alertly took third on the throw but was stranded there as Shannel Blackshear struck out swinging and Michelle Mueller struck out looking.

Wisconsin fended off another bases loaded threat - Northwestern stranded 12 runners in the game - in the sixth and again tried to counter in the bottom of the frame.

Jordan Skinner led off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Powell singled back up the middle. Skinner rounded third and was headed home but center fielder Kristin Scharkey fielded Powell's grounder and gunned down Skinner at the plate.

McIntosh was effective in relief for UW, pitching the final 4.1 innings and surrendering no runs. She walked three and struck out two while giving up three hits.

Wisconsin closes out its seven-game homestand on Wednesday night as South Dakota State visits Goodman Diamond for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
