MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin men’s fall golf schedule has a few returning events, but also opens up some tough new venues for the players under first year head coach Michael Burcin.
“We as a staff are very excited about the fall schedule and the golf courses that we will be competing on,” Burcin explained. “ It is important to us to find very solid tournaments fields at very hard golf courses. Such a golf course as Firestone will prepare our players for post season and competitive golf beyond college if that is a route they choose to pursue. Coming in late I am very thankful for a few of the tournament directors and coaches for allowing us into some of these new events. September 2 is a very important date when it comes time to being able to practice as a team as will that first event at Minnesota.”
The Badger men’s golf team opens the season for the third-straight year Sept. 11-12 in Minneapolis at the Gopher Invitational held at the Spring Hill Golf Club in Wayzata. The Badgers played in the same meet last year placing 10th and were led by then-freshman Stephane Dubois who placed 18th with a 71-74-79—224 in his college debut.
The Badgers return Sept. 26-27 to the Louisville Intercollegiate in Louisville, Ky., for a third year. The Badgers placed 10th of 16 last fall and shot their second lowest team score of the year with 290-293-298—881.
A visit to the famed Firestone Country Club is planned for Oct. 10-11 when the University of Akron hosts the Firestone Invitational.
The Badgers will round out the fall Oct. 30-31 with a visit to Kiawah Island, S.C., for the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate played at the Turtle Point Golf Club and hosted by Charleston Southern.
The spring schedule will be released later this fall, but one event to look forward to is the Big Ten Championships which will be held at the French Lick Resort located in southern Indiana. Both championships will be held here in 2012, 2013, and 2014 and it marks the first time that both the men and women will compete at the same time and on a neutral site.
The men’s championships will be contested on the award-winning Pete Dye course, and the women’s event will be held on the historic Donald Ross Course. Golfweek Magazine recently ranked the Dye course No. 1 and the Ross course No. 2 among the “Best Courses You Can Play” rankings in the state of Indiana.
The Pete Dye course, which was named America’s Best New Public Course in 2009 by Golf Digest, is regarded as one of the most breathtaking and exciting 18 holes of golf in the country. The course was carefully carved on a dramatic hilltop offering a variety of elevation changes, rugged and dramatic terrain, narrow fairways and challenging bunkers. There are spectacular views from every hole, some that stretch for over 40 miles.
