MADISON, Wis. -- Following an impressive season-debut performance last weekend, Wisconsin men's cross country sophomore Michael Brice earned Big Ten Co-Runner of the Week honors, as announced by the conference on Tuesday.
Leading the way for the No. 2-ranked Badgers at the Orange and Blue Preview in Champaign, Ill., Brice finished the 8-kilometer race in a time of 24 minutes, 24 seconds to pick up the individual win. The Badgers also took home the team win with a 33-point effort.
The individual win marked the second of Brice's career. This is also the second time in his career that Brice has earned weekly honors from the Big Ten.
Starting the season off strong is nothing new for the Kaukauna, Wis., native. Last weekend's victory made Brice a winner in his season debut for the second straight year -- he won the Badger Opener in 2010.
Brice shares Big Ten Runner of the Week honors with Ohio State senior Jake Edwards. Edwards ran to an individual win in the Mountaineer Open, and helped pace the Buckeyes to a first-place team finish.
Coincidentally, the last Wisconsin cross country member to earn conference runner of the week honors was Brice after his win in 2010.
"That was a good win for Mike last Friday and a big win for our team as we look towards Big Ten (competition) and beyond," UW head coach Mick Byrne said. "It is nice to see a local Wisconsin guy being recognized by the conference for his winning performance."
