MANKATO, Minn. -- One night after producing its first shutout of the season, Wisconsin (10-10-2, 5-9-2 WCHA) was shutout for the first time this year, falling 3-0 to Minnesota State (7-16-1, 3-12-1 WCHA) on Saturday at Verizon Wireless Center.
The Badgers had their chances, but MSU goaltender Phil Cook stopped 32 shots to blank UW and put a stop to sophomore forward Mark Zengerle's 20-game point scoring streak.
Special teams also proved an important factor, with MSU scoring two first-period power-play goals and the Badgers going 0-for-6 with the man advantage.
Fast Facts | Sophomore forward Mark Zengerle had his 20-game point-scoring streak snapped at 20 games, one game short of Mike Eaves' school record. | Freshman goaltender Joel Rumpel stopped 29 of 31 shots faced, but fell to 7-5-2 on the season. | UW fails in attempt to post first-ever sweep at Minnesota State. | |
The Mavericks struck on their first two power plays, connecting at 12:02 of the first period on a blast from the top of the left faceoff circle. Eli Zuck beat UW goalie Joel Rumpel (Swift Current, Saskatchewan) for the game-winner.
Less than two minutes later, Eriah Hayes redirected a shot past Rumpel to make it 2-0.
The Badgers got a pair of overlapping power plays before the period ended, including 34 seconds of five-on-three action, but like all evening, failed to solve Cook.
The teams skated the final two periods scoreless before Joe Schiller sealed the victory with an empty-net tally at 19:30.
The Badgers had their chances, but Cook was spectacular, stopping Sean Little (Fond du Lac, WIs.) with a sprawling glove save and Derek Lee (North Vancouver, British Columbia) with a reaching blocker save in the last half of the third period. Jake McCabe (Eau Claire, Wis.) also hit a post late on one of UW's three third-period power-play chances. Lee also had a breakaway chance that was stopped with an MSU hook, but a power play was awarded instead of a penalty shot.
Both teams fired 32 shots on goal in the contest.
Wisconsin returns home next weekend to welcome Alaska Anchorage to the Kohl Center. Both Friday and Saturday's contests begin at 7 p.m.
