MADISON, Wis. -- Wrestling without two of its starters, Wisconsin (5-6, 0-4 Big Ten) lost to Purdue (7-7, 2-3 Big Ten), 41-3, at the UW Field House on Friday night. The Boilermakers scored three pins, two tech falls, a major decision and three decisions in UW’s fourth-straight Big Ten conference loss.

Redshirt sophomore Shawn Perry won the only match of the night for the Badgers, defeating Tommy Churchard by an 8-2 decision at 157 lbs. Churchard jumped out to an early lead with the first takedown of the match, but Perry racked up eight-straight points to claim the victory. Perry scored a reversal and two nearfall points in the first period, followed by a takedown in the second, and an escape and 3:23 of riding time in the final period.
Other than Perry’s victory, redshirt freshman Frank Cousins (174 lbs.) and redshirt sophomore Cole Tobin (Hwt.) scored the Badgers’ only offensive points in the dual.
The dual began at 125 lbs. where freshman Austin Hietpas fell to Camden Eppert by a 17-2 (6:35) tech fall. Eppert scored just one takedown, a reversal and three nearfall points in the first two periods, but added three takedowns and three more back points in the third period to clinch the match. Hietpas’ two escapes also came in the final period. Eppert’s victory gave Purdue a 5-0 dual lead.
The Boilermakers took a 10-0 lead after their second-straight tech fall by No. 9 Cashe Quiroga over junior Shane McQuade at 133 lbs. Quiroga took an early 7-1 lead entering the second period after registering two takedowns and three nearfall points in the first. Quiroga then posted five takedowns and three nearfall points to earn a 20-5 (5:00) tech fall as time expired in the second period. McQuade scored five escapes in the matchup.
Purdue scored its first pin of the night at 141 lbs. where Brandon Nelson defeated redshirt freshman Thomas Glenn at 5:33. Nelson led Glenn, 7-0, prior to the fall after scoring three takedowns and an escape. The win extended the Boilermakers’ lead to 16-0.
In the only match of the night featuring two ranked wrestlers, No. 15 Ivan Lopouchanski upset No. 14 Cole Schmitt by a 9-1 major decision. Lopouchanski jumped out to an early lead with a takedown in the first period. He then scored a reversal in the second and two takedowns in the final period. With riding time, Lopouchanski earned a major decision, giving Purdue a 20-0 dual lead.
Perry’s 8-2 decision over Chuchard earned Wisconsin its first points of the dual, cutting the Boilermakers’ lead to 20-3.
At 165 lbs., redshirt freshman Ale Yde fell to Kyle Mosier by a 5-0 decision in just his second match as a Badger. After a scoreless first period, Mosier notched a takedown in the second, followed by an escape and another takedown in the third. Mosier’s victory gave Purdue a 23-3 lead in the dual.
The Boilermakers claimed their second pin at 174 lbs. where Drake Stein defeated redshirt freshman Frank Cousins at 2:09. Cousins took an early lead with a takedown nine seconds into the match, but Stein turned a reversal with 1:07 left in the first into a fall. The pin extended Purdue’s lead to 29-3, putting the dual victory out of reach for the Badgers.
No. 18 Branden Atwood pushed the Boilermakers’ lead to 32-3 with a 6-0 decision against redshirt freshman Timmy McCall at 184 lbs. Following a scoreless first and second period, Atwood scored a reversal 28 seconds into the third after choosing to start in the down position. Atwood scored three nearfall points and 1:03 of riding time as a result of the reversal.
Purdue’s fastest fall of the evening came at 197 lbs. where A.J. Kissel pinned redshirt sophomore Jackson Hein at 1:47. Kissel scored a takedown 27 seconds into the bout and added two nearfall points before pinning Hein. Kissel’s victory gave the Boilermakers a 38-3 dual lead.
At heavyweight, Roger Vukobratovich won Purdue’s fifth-straight match with an 8-4 decision against redshirt sophomore Cole Tobin. Entering the final period, Vukobratovich led Tobin, 5-1, after scoring two takedowns and an escape. He then added another takedown, an escape and 2:41 of riding time to clinch the victory. Tobin scored two escapes and managed to register a takedown with one second left in the bout. The decision gave the Boilermakers a final dual victory of 41-3.
The Badgers continue Big Ten action when they travel to Minneapolis, Minn., on Sunday to take on No. 4 Minnesota at noon.
