MADISON, Wis.-- The Wisconsin wrestling team (5-3, 0-2 Big Ten) lost its second Big Ten conference dual of the season to No. 17 Northwestern (5-1, 1-1 Big Ten), 33-9, at the UW Field House. The Badgers earned two individual victories in the dual, including redshirt junior Cole Schmitt’s 12th win of the season and redshirt freshman Timmy McCall’s first pin as a Badger.

The match began at 125 lbs. where freshman Austin Hietpas fell to No. 7 Levi Mele by a 14-1 major decision. Mele dominated the entire match, scoring 10 points following Hietpas’ escape. The victory gave Northwestern a 4-0 lead.

Jameson Oster then extended the Wildcat lead to 10-0 with a pin against junior Shane McQuade at 6:27. Oster led McQuade by an 8-0 margin prior to the fall.

At 141 lbs., NU earned its third-straight win with a 10-1 major decision by Colin Shober over redshirt freshman Thomas Glenn. Glenn scored his one escape with 25 seconds remaining in the second period. Shober’s win gave Northwestern a 14-0 dual lead.

Wisconsin won its first match of the day at 149 lbs. where No. 13-ranked Schmitt defeated Kaleb Friedley by an 11-5 decision. Schmitt started the match down 5-0 after Friedley scored a takedown and three nearfall points, but managed to rally and went on an 11-point run. Schmitt earned three takedowns, an escape, three nearfall points and 1:56 of riding time, cutting the Wildcat lead to 14-3.

Northwestern scored its second pin of the afternoon at 157 lbs. where No. 3 Jason Welch defeated redshirt sophomore Shawn Perry at 3:41. Welch led the bout by a 4-0 margin prior to the fall. The victory gave NU a 20-3 lead.

At 165 lbs., No. 8 senior Ben Jordan took on Pierce Harger. After a scoreless first period, Harger scored a quick two points on a reversal after starting the second period in the down position. Jordan was able to tie the match with an escape in the second and third period, but Harger scored a takedown with just 14 seconds left in the bout to seal the victory. Harger’s win extended the Wildcat lead to 23-3.

UW lost a third-straight match at 174 lbs. where redshirt freshman Frank Cousins fell to No. 8 Lee Munster by a 14-0 major decision. Munster’s major decision gave Northwestern its biggest lead of the day, 27-3.

UW claimed its second victory of the dual at 184 lbs. where redshirt McCall earned his first pin as a Badger. McCall took an early lead against Marcus Shrewsbury with a takedown in the first period, and followed that with a takedown in the second after Shrewsbury escaped from the down position. The takedown immediately led to the fall, which came at 4:06, narrowing Northwestern’s lead to 27-9.

At 197 lbs., the Wildcats extended their lead to 30-9 with a 3-2 decision by No. 20 John Schoen over redshirt sophomore Jackson Hein. Hein took the lead with an escape to start the second period, but Schoen’s escape and takedown in the third proved to be too much for Hein to overcome.

Northwestern then clinched the dual with a 7-3 decision by No. 19 Mike McMullan over redshirt sophomore Cole Tobin. Tobin scored three escapes in the bout, but McMullan’s win gave NU a final dual victory of 33-9.

The Badgers take on Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Friday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. (CT), and then return home on Sunday to battle Penn State at the UW Field House at 1 p.m. (CT).
