MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin wrestling team opened the 2012-13 season in front of 331 fans at its annual intrasquad scrimmage Thursday night at the UW Field House. Those fans saw the white team dominate the event, winning nine of the 11 matches for a 39-6 victory.
Badgers’ head coach Barry Davis said he liked how his team went about the scrimmage - adding that guys still have some things to work on - but it was the passion that his wrestlers, especially some of the veterans, that really impressed him.
“I liked the intensity that some of the guys brought,” Davis said. “Saw a lot of guys take control, from the intensity point of view, and looking to score points.
One of the more intriguing weight class battles of the night was at heavyweight, where 2011 NCAA qualifier Cole Tobin is battling No. 15-ranked Connor Medbery for the starting spot. Medbery came out on top in an 8-2 decision, but Davis said he was impressed with what he saw from both wrestlers.
“Connor came out on top, but Cole hung in there and gave himself chances to win it,” Davis said. “Both guys battled really well and I think throughout the year they are going to make each other better, and that’s what you need. You need that type of competition.”
The scrimmage also featured No. 3 Tyler Graff’s first match as a Badger since the 2010 season, and he certainly looked impressive in his debut, earning a technical fall victory, 25-9, in 6:51 over Shane McQuade in the first of two 141 lbs. bouts on the night.
Davis said that Graff’s return to folkstyle wrestling is going to take time after spending a year wrestling freestyle in hopes of qualifying for the 2012 Summer Olympics, but that it shouldn’t be long before Graff is back in the college state of mind.
“It was good to get him back into that mode,” Davis said of Graff. “He’s not quite there yet, but he’s made progress. Wrestling at folkstyle is completely different, but you certainly get that feel back real quickly.”
Redshirt junior Jackson Hein and redshirt sophomore Timmy McCall showed off some of that intensity their coach likes in their 197 lbs. match. In the most hard fought match of the night, Hein edged McCall out in overtime in a 2-1 decision.
No. 16 Jesse Thielke made his Wisconsin debut at the intrasquad scrimmage, and earned one of three wins by fall on the night for the white team. Thielke was able to pin Matt Cavallaris in just over two and a half minutes in one of the 133 lbs. matches.
Isaac Jordan and Cole Schmitt earned the white team’s two other wins by fall, pinning Sanantonio Catheray in four minutes and Lenny Bloom in just 15 seconds, respectively.
Wisconsin begins its regular season next Sunday, Nov. 11, at the UW Field House against Hofstra. The dual starts at 1 p.m. and those that present a military ID will gain free admission.
