DULUTH, Minn. -- The Wisconsin women's hockey team fired 44 shots on goal but converted just two, falling 4-2 to Minnesota in Sunday's NCAA championship game at Amsoil Arena. Despite fighting back from an early two-goal deficit, the Gophers proved to be too much.

Minnesota scored twice within three minutes midway through the first period. The Badgers answered back, capitalizing on a man-advantage with senior Stephanie McKeough netting UW's first goal with just seconds left in the power play. McKeough slid a wrist shot from the point that weaved through traffic and beat Minnesota goalie Noora Räty.

 Fast Facts
• UW battled back from an early 2-0 first period lead to tie the game late in the first
• Minnesota's game-winning goal came courtesy of a penalty shot with 1:32 left in the first
• Wisconsin's Carolyne Prevost and Brooke Ammerman were named to the Frozen Four All-Tournament Team

Wisconsin then knotted the score at the 15:43 mark when Brooke Ammerman poked the puck in past Räty after Carolyne Prévost snagged it away from Minnesota on their end of the ice. Prevost outworked the Gophers behind the net and was able to slide the puck in front where Ammerman banged it home.

The game was tied for less than three minutes before Minnesota took advantage of a shorthanded opportunity. After a Gopher player was dragged down from behind on a breakaway, Emily West converted a penalty shot. That gave the Gophers a 3-2 advantage at the end of the first period.

The two teams battled through a scoreless second period, with the Badgers doubling up the Gophers on shots, 14-7. Less than four minutes into the third period, Minnesota got an insurance goal from Sarah Erickson, her second of the day. Despite putting 20 shots on goal in the final period, UW could not break through and Minnesota held on for its third NCAA title.

On the day, Wisconsin outshot the Gophers 44-25 and had five power plays to just one for Minnesota. That included a 5-on-3 for a little over a minute in the first period with the score tied but UW was unable to convert.

Prévost and Ammerman were named to the Frozen Four All-Tournament Team while Minnesota's Räty was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. She made 42 saves in the title game.

Badger sophomore goaltender Alex Rigsby saw 25 shots in the game, putting a stop to 21 of them. Rigsby ends the season with a 33-5-2 record and 1,044 total saves.
