MADISON, Wis.-- The sun came out over Lake Mendota just as the racing began for the Wisconsin men’s rowing team as they hosted Minnesota and the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday.

The Badger boats in Madison were as good as the weather, claiming the top two spots in all six of their races against Minnesota and MSOE. UW’s first and second varsity boats and first novice boat are competing at the Stanford Invitational in California.

Wisconsin’s two varsity eight boats jumped out to an early lead and kept a close race with each other. The boats finished just two seconds apart, with the first varsity eight crossing the finish line first with a time of 6:04.3. Minnesota placed third and MSOE finished fourth, both more than 25 seconds behind Wisconsin on the two kilometer course.

 Fast Facts
• Badgers come in first and second in all 6 races
• Wisconsin's varsity eight finishes 2 kilometer course in 6:04.3, the fastest time of the day

The Badgers finished in first and second in both varsity four races.  In the six-boat “A” race, UW’s top boat finished in 6:43.1 followed by the second four in 6:47.0. Minnesota finished fourth and fifth, while MSOE claimed the final two spots. In the varsity four “B” race, Wisconsin’s fourth boat beat the third boat by nearly 10 seconds, followed by the third varsity four boats from MSOE and Minnesota.

All four of Wisconsin’s varsity four boats finished with at least a 10-second lead over the nearest non-Badger boat. The Badgers’ second-place boat in the “B” race finished 20 seconds ahead of third-place MSOE and 49 seconds ahead of Minnesota.

In the freshman eight race, the two UW boats raced a tight race against each other, both finishing over 22 seconds ahead of Minnesota. Wisconsin’s second novice boat finished in 6:25.7, just 2.2 seconds ahead of UW’s first novice eight.

“That was the best I have ever seen the freshman race,” assistant coach Beau Hoopman said. “They had a tight race the entire time, and it was great to see them push each other to the finish line.”

The final two races of the day were the freshman four “A” and “B” races. The four UW freshman boats finished the day strong, claiming the top two finishes in both races. The first Wisconsin boat finished in 7:04.2, 10 seconds ahead of the second freshman boat. Minnesota and MSOE tied for third with a time of 7:39.3.

In the freshman four “B” race, Wisconsin’s third four crossed the line first in 6:59.3, followed by the fourth Badger four in 7:07.7. Minnesota’s second and third freshman fours finished third and fourth, respectively.

Wisconsin’s first two varsity boats and top novice boats are racing against California, Oregon State and Stanford in Stanford, Calif. this weekend. The Badgers will compete as a full team in two weeks when they host Boston and Dartmouth on Lake Mendota.
