SALEM, Va. -- Just two days after combining to beat its opponents by a score of 88-3, the No. 20 Wisconsin wrestling team grinded out a two-point win against No. 14 Virginia but dropped two tight contests against North Carolina and Old Dominion at the Hokie Duals in the Salem Civic Center in Salem, Va.
Fast Facts | • Graff improves to 5-0 on the season at 133 lbs., and records two technical falls on the day | • Medbery also improves to 5-0 and records his second technical fall of the season | • Badgers come back from 17-10 deficit with three matches remaining against Virginia to pull out win | |
“It was a tough day for the Badgers," Wisconsin head coach Barry Davis said. "We wrestled tough, just weren’t able to come out on top. We had opportunities, just didn’t capitalize."
The Badgers fell 24-21 to North Carolina, who received votes in the latest AWN Coaches Poll, in the first dual of the day but nearly fought back after being defeated by falls in two matches and from a forfeit in another.
Redshirt junior Matt Cavallaris and No. 10 Jesse Thielke were pinned at 125 lbs., and 141 lbs., respectively to give the Tar Heels an early 12-3 lead. No. 7 Isaac Jordan then got the Badgers back in it with a pin of his own, but the Badgers had to forfeit a match at 174 lbs.
The Tar Heels put it away at 197 lbs., after Frank Abbondanza defeated redshirt junior Timmy McCall 2-0. No. 6 Connor Medbery closed out the dual with a technical fall over Bob Coe in 2:15 by a score of 16-0.
The Badgers won the final three matches against No. 14 Virginia to record the come-from-behind victory. After UW forfeited the 174 lbs., match to give the Cavaliers a 17-10 lead, No. 12 Jackson Hein, McCall and Medbery closed things out with three close victories.
Hein recorded a sudden victory over No. 9 Jon Fausey by a score of 3-1, McCall won by decision over Zach Nye, 6-4, and Medbery sealed the win with a 6-5 decision over Ethan Hayes. The win was Wisconsin’s first over a ranked opponent this season.
In the third and final dual of the day, the Badgers again made a late push but fell just short, falling 20-19 to Old Dominion, who also received votes in the latest AWN Coaches Poll.
Old Dominion’s Jack Dechow recorded a major decision over Hein 13-5 at 184 lbs., to give the Monarchs a 20-13 lead and again put pressure on McCall and Medbery.
McCall and Medbery again recorded close victories by scores of 7-6 and 3-2, respectively, but their efforts came up just short, as UW needed at least one major decision to come out on top.
No. 2 Tyler Graff (133 lbs.) highlighted Wisconsin’s day by going 3-0 and recording two major decisions. Against North Carolina, he beat Tony Heilmann 15-6 and scored a combined 39 points in his next two matches.
Jordan also went 3-0 on the day and recorded two decisions after his pin in the first match against North Carolina.
"With four young guys in the lineup it is a learning process," Davis said. "It is my job as a coach to help them learn from today’s experiences. Now we get back to work to prepare for Friday’s matches.”
The Badgers will travel to Whitewater, Wis., Friday for their next bit of action. They square off against UW-Parkside at 6 p.m. (CT) and UW-Whitewater at 7:30 p.m. (CT).
