ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- After a weekend off, it only took nine minutes for the Badgers to find their stride, and once they did, there was no looking back. Six different Badgers scored and Alex Rigsby earned her fifth shutout of the season as Wisconsin blanked St. Cloud State, 6-0, Friday afternoon at the National Hockey Center.
Both Wisconsin (16-9-2, 12-9-2-2 WCHA) and St. Cloud State (8-19-2, 4-18-1-0 WCHA) returned to the ice after a bye week and it was to the advantage of the Badgers as neither side started the game in top form.
The Huskies started to get some opportunities from a tired UW line after the Badgers were stuck on the ice for two consecutive icing calls early in the first period. Wisconsin used its timeout to regroup and to get fresh skaters on the ice.
Shortly after the timeout the Badgers were awarded the first power play of the game and quickly took advantage of it.
Only 20 seconds into the man advantage, Madison Packer drove to the net and fired a shot toward the near side. SCSU goaltender Julie Friend made the first save, but the rebound went right to the stick of Karley Sylvester at the far post, who tapped it back in for her eighth goal of the season.
Wisconsin scored two more goals, off the sticks of Saige Pacholok and Alev Kelter, before the opening period came to a close to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission. Both goals came off shots from the point with players screening Friend in front of the net.
Wisconsin dominated the second period, outshooting St. Cloud State 16-3, but only scored once. Brianna Decker took control of the puck in the SCSU end after a long stretch of play. Taking advantage of the tired St. Cloud State players, Decker circled the zone with the puck before firing a shot on net that was redirected by Erika Sowchuk.
Decker the led a Badger offensive to start the third period in which Wisconsin scored its fifth and sixth goals within the first two minutes of the period. Decker scored an unassisted goal, while Courtney Burke scored her fourth of the season.
On the other end of the ice, Rigsby made 23 stops for her 21st shutout of her career. Rigsby also helped the Badgers kill off two penalties, making seven saves while short-handed.
In the three games played against St. Cloud State so far this season, the Badgers have scored six goals in each of them; winning 6-0 and 6-3 on Nov. 23-24.
Head coach Mark Johnson is also just one conference win away from recording his 200th WCHA win as the Badgers’ head coach.
Wisconsin and St. Cloud State will return to the ice tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. for the series finale.
