The Badgers are coming off a week idle period, last competing in Iowa City, Iowa, at the Iowa Big Ten Preview. Wisconsin placed third in the standings with a team score of 64 points.
“You can say going down to Iowa was all about training but then after the race start freaking out because it didn’t go the way you had planned,” said Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Mick Byrne. “The plan was simply to go down there to look at a course and give the young guys the opportunity to show us what they have. For us it was to figure out the pieces of the puzzle and move forward. That is exactly what happened.”
Byrne is not too concerned with UW’s result of the Iowa Big Ten Preview.
“I always say that September is for training not for racing,” Byrne said. “It’s hard to do both training and racing at the same time.”
As for this weekend, his original idea was to go down to Louisville for the younger guys to experience the course that they would potential run on in next November at the 2015 NCAA Cross Country Championship.
Saturday marks the season debut for senior Michael Van Voorhis and sophomore Malachy Schrobilgen, two of UW’s most experienced runners. Van Voorhis was UW’s top-finisher at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional last fall, while Schrobilgen earned All-America honors and won the Big Ten individual title as a freshman.
“It will be exciting to see Malachy and Michael open up,” Byrne said. “They look great at practice and their workouts. They are anxious to get going. They have waited quite a while. For Malachy, the last time he competed was Big Ten Outdoor Championship. Michael ran in the regional meet but it has been a long time for both of them.”
