BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The No. 2 Wisconsin women’s hockey team completed its sweep of Bemidji State on Saturday, as the Badgers bested the Beavers, 4-3, at the Sanford Center.
The Badgers featured a balanced attack, as four different Badgers (8-2-0, 6-2-0-0 WCHA) found the back of the net, and Wisconsin outshot Bemidji State (4-4-0, 0-4-0-0 WCHA) 46-18.
“It’s good from the standpoint that we created a lot of opportunities, had a lot of grade-A quality chances today,” Wisconsin head coach Mark Johnson said about the Badgers' balanced attack on offense.
The Badgers were as equally impressive with the number of offensive opportunities as they were with their shots on goal mark. The Bemidji State defenders were forced to step in front of a total of 20 additional shots that the Badgers fired on the Beavers’ netminder.
Just under three minutes into the game, Brittany Ammerman tallied her team-leading sixth goal of the year, tipping in a shot past BSU goaltender Erin Deters to give UW a 1-0 advantage.
However, the UW lead wouldn’t hold, as 40 seconds later Kristin Huber shot a puck that bounced off a UW defender and past Wisconsin netminder Ann-Renee Desbiens to tie the game at 1-1.
Midway through the first stanza, freshman Emily Clark lit the lamp off assists from Baylee Wellhausen and Karley Sylvester to put the Badgers back in front. With her assist, Sylvester reclaimed her share of the nation’s point lead, joining Boston College’s Alex Carpenter with 15, while also passing her teammate, freshman Annie Pankowski, for the most assists in the country.
Wisconsin extended its lead to 3-1 early in the second, as Sarah Nurse tallied her fourth goal of the year on a UW power play.
The Badgers finished 1-4 on the power play, shutting out Bemidji State while on the penalty kill, 0-2.
Once again, Bemidji State countered, as Hanna Moher beat Desbiens to cut the UW lead back to one.
Early in the third period, Wisconsin again took a two-goal lead thanks to Annie Pankowski’s tip-in off of a Jenny Ryan shot. While that goal proved to be the difference maker, Pankowski wasn’t about to let her quick hands take all the credit.
“Obviously it was exciting, I couldn’t have done it without Jenny, it was a nice shot from the point.” Pankowski explained. “It all started with a good forecheck so it was really a team effort.”
BSU countered with a goal of its own with just over 15 minutes remaining as Alex Citrowske scored on a BSU rush.
Desbiens made 15 saves to improve to 6-2-0 on the season, while Deters collected a career-high 42 saves.
With this weekend’s sweep in the books, Johnson allowed himself to look forward to next weekend’s series.
“Well Monday we are going to have to get together,” Johnson said. “We’re going to be missing two kids on Friday night and missing three kids on Saturday, so we’re going to have to rearrange our lines and create some chemistry in a short period of time. Obviously going up to North Dakota will be a challenge but we’ll start that on Monday.”
Wisconsin continues its four-game road swing next weekend when it travels to Grand Forks, North Dakota, to take on No. 9/8 North Dakota. Faceoff next Friday is scheduled for 7 p.m., while Saturday’s contest will begin at 3 p.m.
