ANNAPOLIS, Md.—The No. 19 Wisconsin wrestling program made a statement at the Navy Classic Saturday night. After a tough loss on Thursday, the Badgers stepped it up and came out with a top-five finish and 105 points.
Wisconsin was one of three ranked teams in the day’s event, also including No. 23 Chattanooga and No. 24 Ohio. Brown, Bucknell, Citadel, Cleveland State, George Mason, Kent State, Navy, North Carolina, Princeton and West Virginia tallied up the rest of the participants.
All-American Isaac Jordan was a major force in the Badgers’ performance at the Navy Classic. Jordan went 15-0 in the first round before pinning Galloway Thurston of Brown at 4:24 in the second round. Jordan clinched a 7-2 decision in the second round. In his final match, Jordan topped Ohio’s Harrison Hightower with a major decision to take first place at 165 lbs.
Ryan Taylor made it to the finals where he walked away with second place at 133 lbs., after a 6-3 decision by Kent State’s Mackenzie McGuire.
Gabe Grahek won with a 4-0 decision in the 141 wrestleback. TJ Ruschell snagged a 10-3 decision over Blake Ruolo of Buffalo in the first round, but lost in the second round to The Citadel’s Matthew Frisch.
Seth Liegel and Jarod Donar both wrestled at 157 lbs., and each won by decision in their first rounds but fell in the second.
At 174 lbs., Jake Stilling lost in his second round and went on to face Frank Cousins in the consolation bracket. Cousins won three rounds before being eliminated. The battle of these Badgers teammates was played out in good spirits.
Another stellar performance came from freshman Ricky Robertson. With only three career starts under his belt, Robertson made it all the way to the finals, where he won with a fall at 3:54.
No. 13 senior Timmy McCall also proved to be a vital component once again. McCall won by moderate means in the first three rounds, 2-1, 6-1 and 4-0, respectively.
McCall came on strong in the semifinals to win by tech fall at 5:00 over Stephan Suglio of Kent State. He took second place in the final round with a 7-6 decision by Abram Ayala of Princeton.
No. 10 Connor Medbery took first in the heavyweight class with a 12-0 major decision in the finals. He finished the night with an impressive record of 55-0.
The Badgers hit the road again to face South Dakota State next Saturday and No. 25 North Dakota State next Sunday.
