Wisconsin travels to Pointer Open to start the season

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Wisconsin wrestling program sent 12 wrestlers to compete at the Pointer Open today.

Freshman Johnny Jimenez took first place at 125 lbs. Jimenez won by an 11-3 major decision in the semifinal and an 11-1 major decision in the first place match.

Jens Lantz, Luke Rowh and Jared Scharenbrock joined Jimenez at the podium by taking individual crowns in their respective weight classes.

At 141 lbs., Lantz won by fall (2:42) over Granatelli in the semifinal and over Her with a 6-1 decision in his final match. Also at 141 lbs., Rowh marked a 6-5 decision over Henle in the semifinal before winning his final by injury default at 2:48.

Scharenbrock, 157 lbs., recorded a fall in the semifinal and final matches, at 0:59 and 2:08, respectively, earning Wisconsin 12 points.

Englebert took second in the 149 lbs. class with a 10-6 decision over Lakeland’s McCauley in the semifinal and a loss to Snow in a 13-4 major decision in the final.

Also at 157 lbs., Christensen won by tech fall 18-0 in the semifinal, but fell in a 5-2 decision in the first place match. In the other 157 lbs. match, Cullen Pedersen dropped his second consolation round in a 3-2 decision.

Nic Veling and Brett Hochstaetter both wrestled at 184 lbs. Veling took fifth place, earning Wisconsin six team points. He fell in a 3-1 match in the consolation semifinal before winning an 8-2 decision in the fifth place match. Hochstaetter won his fourth consolation round in a 15-1 major decision, but was defeated in a 5-0 decision in the fifth round.

Wisconsin will host Maryland at the UW Field House on Nov. 14.
