MADISON, Wis. -- Five days after Wisconsin claimed its first ranked win of the season, the Badgers fell short, 5-2, to No. 35 Indiana, Friday, at the Nielsen Tennis Center.
“Today was rough,” UW head coach Tina Samara said. “In some sense, we gave them a tough match but on every court no one played at the level that they have been.”
The Badgers (7-5, 2-2 Big Ten) were unable to claim the doubles point.
“We came out a little slow in doubles,” assistant coach Matt Manasse said. “Eventually we started to match their intensity and match the aggressive game style that they had.”
Becca Bailey and Sydney Rider fell short, 8-4, to Alecia Kauss and Kayla Fujimoto in No. 3 doubles.
At No. 1 doubles, Lauren Chypyha and Lauren Burich were also topped by Carolyn Chupa and Katie Klyczek, 8-3.
In singles action, Chypyha remained a bright spot for Wisconsin, capturing her 12th-straight win and fourth conference win. She earned a 6-4, 6-4, win over Katie Klyczek at No. 1 singles. With the win, Chypyha matched her conference win total from last year
“The great part of it is that I don’t think she has played her best tennis yet,” Samara said. “We have to remember she is only a sophomore and with the direction she is heading, it’s going to be fun to watch her these next few years.”
At No. 4 singles, Nova Patel captured her third conference win in comeback fashion, defeating Alecia Kauss 1-6, 6-2, 6-2,
“We switched Nova up to No. 4 and obviously losing the first set, we wondered what we did,” said Samara. “But we saw her all week in practice and she was really playing at a better level and moving better than she has all year. When she shows up physically and mentally, she is going to be tough to beat.”
In No. 3 singles, Anastasia Tripolskaya dropped a 6-0, 6-4, match to Carolyn Chupa.
At No. 5 singles, Rider was defeated, 6-1, 6-0, by Shannon Murdy.
Bailey fell short, 7-6, 6-0, to Paula Gutierrez in No. 6 singles.
Burich lost, 6-3, 6-2, to Sophie Garre in No. 2 singles.
“I know we have the talent to beat these kind of teams,” said Manasse. “We just have to come out and believe it.”
The Badgers wrap up the weekend with a noon tilt at Nielsen against Purdue on Sunday.
