MINNEAPOLIS --  The No. 3 Wisconsin women's hockey team saw its 12-game unbeaten streak draw to a close on Saturday night as it fell 4-1 to No. 2 Minnesota at Ridder Arena.

It marked only the Badgers' (17-3-1, 13-3-1-0 WCHA) third loss of the campaign, while the Gophers (19-1-2, 12-1-2-0 WCHA) extended their unbeaten streak to 12 games.

"I thought we put forth a good effort for not playing for five weeks," Wisconsin head coach Mark Johnson said.  "For the most part, we played pretty well, but it obviously wasn't good enough."

Senior Karley Sylvester scored the Badgers' lone goal of the game, tallying her ninth of the season on a UW power play. 

UW netmidner Ann-Renée Desbiens made 27 saves in the defeat, while Minnesota goaltender Amanda Leveille recorded 23 stops. 

With just over a minute remaining in the first, Cara Piazza capitalized on a UW miscue and beat Desbiens to give UM a 1-0 heading into the first intermission.

After a delay of game call was issued on Leveille, Sylvester and the Badgers converted on the power play as Sylvester fired in a rebound off of a Courtney Burke shot to tie the game at one halfway through the second.

However, UM tallied the final three goals to skate away with the win. 

Hannah Brandt fired a wrister past Desbiens with four minutes remaining in the second frame to take a 2-1 lead. 

In the third, Dani Cameranesi found the back of the net, firing the puck between the legs of Desbiens five minutes into the period. Nine minutes later, Hannah Brandt tipped in a shot past Desbiens to cap off the scoring for Minnesota. 

The Gophers outshot Wisconsin 31-24, marking only the second time this season that the Badgers have been outshot and have been held under 30 shots in a contest. 

"The hard part is that a game like today is quicker, it's going to be a lot faster than practice," Johnson said. "But again, I thought from the opening shift we did a pretty good job."

Wisconsin and Minnesota wrap up their series on Sunday with a 2 p.m. contest. 

"Well, we're close, but if you're going to be successful against the top teams, you have to put in the full 60-minutes," Johnson said. "There were some goals we gave up that were certainly preventable. We'll rebound and we'll get ourselves going tomorrow."
