ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The fall season for the UW women's tennis team wrapped up as
Lauren Chypyha's impressive run at the ITA Midwest Regional comes to an end at the hands of Maddie Lipp of Northwestern.
After taking the first set, 6-2, Chypyha lost the final two sets to drop the semifinal match, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Lipp, a sophomore from Lake Forest, Illinois, entered the tournament as the second seed and No. 110 in the ITA polls.
Prior to the disappointing finish, Chypyha took down Ferny Angeles Paz of Ohio State in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-7, 6-3.
"Obviously we are really proud of Lauren's effort this week," said head coach
Tina Samara. "She won seven of 11 sets and this is against some of the best players in the region. I feel like she has finally solidified herself as one of the top players in the Big Ten. Now we can really go to work with our team and prepare for the very challenging spring schedule we have ahead of us."
Chypyha concludes her fall season with a record of 16-3 in singles play and her quarterfinal win tied her with Shana McElroy for 11th place on UW's all-time career wins list with 81.
The Badgers will begin their spring season on January 29, 2016, as they host Houston at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

Oct. 25, 2015Lauren Chypyha continued her winning ways in thrilling fashion Sunday at the ITA Midwest Regionals. The senior took down Alex Chatt of Northwestern in one of the most exciting matches of the year.
Back and forth all match, it came down to the final points of the final set where Chypyha trailed 6-5 and down 40-15. The Toronto native would fight off three match points to storm back and take the point. From there, she took command early in the tie-breaker and pulled out the match, 6-7, 7-5, 7-6 (3). With the win, Chypyha advances to the quarterfinals of the singles main draw on Monday.
"What a battle Lauren had today," head coach
Tina Samara beamed. "In my opinion, matches that close usually come down to desire. She has worked so hard for these moments and that's really all I reminded her of on the changeovers toward the end of the match. I told her I've been in her shoes and this is why you work so hard… for these moments.
"It was extra special that she pulled this match out with her parents in the stands. Last year at this time she had to leave the regional tournament for a family emergency. Today's win was well deserved."
The win puts Chypyha at 15-2 on the year, and one win away from tying Shana McElroy for 11th on UW's all-time career wins list.
On the doubles courts,
Lauren Burich and
Kelsey Grambeau's run came to a halt as they were knocked off by Jillian Rooney and Erin Larner of Northwestern, 8-4, who entered the tournament as the second seed.
"We had our chances in doubles," Samara added. "We went down early and then got it back to 4-4 deuce. That was a big point that didn't go our way. Today we just weren't able to execute in the crucial moments like we did the last two matches."
Chypyha will take on Ferny Angeles Paz of Ohio State at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 26, with a trip to the semifinals on the line.

Tina Samara said it best, "
Lauren Chypyha flat out took care of business."
The senior from Toronto took down Zaina Sufi of Depaul by a dominating score of 6-1, 6-1 Saturday, to advance to the round of 16 of the ITA Midwest Regionals.
Last year, Chypyha reached the quarterfinals of this tournament before being forced to withdraw with a family emergency. She'll have a chance to make amends this year when she squares off with Alex Chatt of Northwestern with a trip to the round of eight on the line.
With the win, Chypyha moves to 14-2 on the year.
In other singles main draw action,
Ekaterina Stepanova suffered a tough three-set loss against Erin Larner of Northwestern, who is currently ranked 122nd in the ITA polls.
Maria Avgerinos' run also came to an end as she was knocked off by Lexi Baylis of Michigan State.
On the doubles courts,
Lauren Burich and
Kelsey Grambeau continued their successful run with a victory over Patricia Lancranjan and Marina Cozac of DePaul, to advance to the quarterfinals where they will face Jillian Rooney and Larner of Northwestern.
"It was a good, but rough day overall," Samara added. "Kelsey and Lauren continued to improve and commit to the things that we need to do in doubles. Kate had a heartbreaker against a ranked player. She was in control of the third set but just made some loose errors on crucial points. But I have no doubt she will clean that up come spring."
The Badgers will continue play on Sunday, Oct. 25, with doubles action starting at 10 a.m. and singles play beginning at 1 p.m.

It was a very good effort and move in the right direction."
In singles action, sophomore,
Kelsey Grambeau fell one step short of qualifying for the singles main draw as she was knocked out by Daniela Pedraza Novak of Illinois, 6-2, 6-1. Despite the loss, Grambeau still sits at 11-5 on the fall season.

Grambeau knocked off Diana Tokar of Marquette, 6-4, 7-5 before taking down Claire Aleck of Toledo, 6-3, 6-1 in the second round. Grambeau moves on to the qualifying round of 16 and now needs just one more win to advance to the singles main draw.

Sydney Rider also picked up an opening victory for the Badgers by defeating Coleen O'Brien of Toledo, 7-5, 6-2.
"We sure like to make things tough," Samara added. "Lauren was down 5-1 in the second set, Sydney was down 5-0 in the first set, and Kelsey was down at some point in both sets. But we showed a willingness to push through which is always something you want your players to do. There are days where that's all you can do and I'm happy they never quit."
UW hit a bit of a road bump in the second round though as both Burich and Rider suffered round of 32 defeats.
Grambeau will continue play on Friday, beginning with the qualifying singles round of 16 at 9:00 a.m. The doubles main draw with doubles beginning at 2 p.m.
