MADISON, Wis. –
Several close matches showed the promise of an exciting season with a loaded lineup as the Badgers took the first steps on the mat this season at the Red/White Dual. The White team had a narrow 18-17 win over the Red team on Saturday in the UW Field House.

The dual started with a 157-pound bout between freshman Jared Scharenbrock and junior Santonio Cathery. Scharenbrock struck early with two near fall points and a takedown early in the first period, followed by back to back sets of four near fall points to give him a 12-0 lead coming out of the first period. Another takedown and two more back points clinched an 18-0 technical fall in Scharenbrock's favor.

Sophomore Johnny Jimenez, who finished his true freshman campaign with a 5-9 overall record, claimed a 1-0 decision over freshman Michael Cullen. The two 125-pounders went scoreless through all three periods but Jimenez won with two minutes of riding time.

Eli Stickley and Cole Martin made their debut in the UW Field House and did not disappoint the crowd. The 141-pound freshmen battled hard and went scoreless through the first two periods but spiced things up in the third period. With 45 seconds on the clock, Stickley used a takedown and riding time point to defeat Martin, 3-1.

The nail biter at 141 pounds was followed by another match that had fans on the edge of their seats. At 149 pounds, sophomore Andrew Crone separated the score with a 6-5 win over junior Rylan Lubeck. Crone took a 2-0 lead after the first period with a takedown at the 45-second mark.

Lubeck wasn't going down that easy, after Crone started down and escaped in the beginning of the second period, Lubeck retaliated with a takedown of his own to narrow Crone's lead to 3-2. Crone managed to escape again, leaving him with the 4-2 advantage headed into the third period. Lubeck managed two more escapes and made it close by taking a stalling point but Crone sealed the deal with a takedown with nine seconds remaining.

Sophomore Ricky Robertson claimed a 3-1 decision over Mason Reinhardt in the 174/184 pounds exhibition match with a takedown and 2:07 riding time.

At 184 pounds, sophomore Jake Stilling jumped out with a 3-1 win over Ryan Christensen. Stilling used a takedown in the first minute of the match to take an early advantage. Christensen escaped seven seconds later but Stilling's escape at the end of the third period helped keep him on top.

In a 197-pound match between true freshmen, Hunter Ritter won in a 6-3 decision over David Chadd with a takedown and two reversals.

It was all sophomore Eric Peissig in the second period of the 197-pound match between Peissig and junior Nic Veling as he was up 3-0 off of an escape and takedown. Veling escaped at the start of the third period but Peissig held on to a 3-1 victory.

Senior Brock Horwath knew he had some big shoes to fill in the heavyweight slot and he made a huge statement with a 15-0 win by technical fall over Ben Stone. Horwath used two takedowns, one reversal and eight near fall points to decide the match.

The dual closed with an exciting 157-pounds match between TJ Ruschell and Jared Scharenbrock. Ruschell won by major decision, 15-4, with eight back points, two reversals, one takedown and one escape.

The Badgers open up their regular season on Nov. 12 when they host UW-Whitewater for a 7 p.m. bout.
