Sophomore takes second in first tournament of the season

MADISON, Wis. – Sophomore Johnny Jimenez ripped through the 125-pound bracket at the Michigan State Open on Sunday.

Jimenez started the day with a 3-2 decision over Aaron Assad of Missouri. He then took a 4-3 decision from Purdue's Ben Thornton in the quarterfinals. Jimenez handed Central Michigan's Carter Ballinger a 12-10 loss by decision to qualify for the semifinals. Jimenez was pinned by Bucknell's Paul Petrov in 5:44 to finish in second place, the highest placing of any Badger in the MSU Open.

Junior Rylan Lubeck took fourth place in the 149-pound weight class after winning two decisions and one major decision. Lubeck defeated Northern Illinois' Austin Culton in the first round with a 6-3 decision before trumping Ohio's Zach Wilson with a 7-0 decision to put him in the quarterfinals. Lubeck faced Ohio State's Blake Riley-Hawkins in the quarterfinals and came out fighting. Lubeck finished off Riley-Hawkins, who had a 5-6 record for the Hawkeyes last season, with a 9-1 major decision.

In the semifinals, Lubeck fell to Central Michigan's Justin Oliver by an 11-4 decision before succumbing to Indiana's Luke Blanton in the third-place match by a 7-1 decision.

Junior TJ Ruschell (157 pounds) started on a good run through the tournament, overcoming his first two opponents. After receiving a bye in the first round, Ruschell had a huge 25-4 win by major decision over Hassan Ajami. Ruschell carried that momentum into his next match with Cam Tessari (Lindsey Wilson), who he beat with a 5-3 decision. Ruschell ended in fourth place after losing by a 3-2 decision in the semifinal and a 3-2 decision in the third-place match.

Freshman Ryan Christensen came in fourth place after defeating Ohio State's Sean Prather with a 3-0 decision and Purdue's Tanner Lynde with a 6-4 decision. He eventually fell to Central Michigan's Austin Severn in sudden victory -1, 3-1 to force him into the third-place match where he dropped a 10-1 major decision to Jordan Ellingwood.

Wisconsin's true freshmen had a huge showing in the freshman/sophomore bracket of the tournament.

The most impressive showing was by Hunter Ritter, who snagged the first-place crown at 184 pounds. Ritter went 4-0 with one major decision, two decisions and a medical forfeit.
