Big Ten Linebacker of the Year adds national honor as second-team All-American
MADISON, Wis. – The Big Ten's best linebacker has been named one of the nation's best, as well.
Wisconsin OLB Joe Schobert earned a place on the Walter Camp All-America second team on Thursday, the latest honor for the Badgers' senior pass rusher. The honor comes on the heels of Schobert being named Butkus-Fitzgerald Big Ten Linebacker of the Year and a first-team All-Big Ten selection.
Schobert is just the fifth linebacker in school history to earn All-America honors, joining Hal Faverty and Deral Teteak of the famed "Hard Rocks" defense in 1951, Ken Criter in 1968 and Chris Borland in 2011 and 2013.
Schobert has tallied 18.5 tackles for loss on the season, ranking in a tie for No. 7 nationally and third among Big Ten players. His 9.5 sacks rank him in a tie for 11th nationally and third in the conference.Â
The Waukesha native also has tied UW's single-season record for forced fumbles with five, a total that ranks him No. 2 nationally this season. He grabbed the first interception of his career this season and has recorded 14 quarterback hurries.
Schobert is joined on the Walter Camp All-America second team by Missouri's Kentrell Brothers and Ohio State's Raekwon McMillan. The first team linebackers are Alabama's Reggie Ragland, Notre Dame's Jaylon Smith and Temple's Tyler Matakevich.
Thursday's announcement marked the 126th edition of the Walter Camp All-America team, which is the nation's oldest.
