Wisconsin softball has been busy with training and volunteering
Happy Finals,
It's been a beautiful week in Madison, with temperatures in 40s and 50s. People are outside having lunch, jogging, biking and studying. This was our last week for team individuals, lifting and conditioning. I can't say enough about how proud our staff is to watch this team get stronger and more confident in the weight room. The Badger softball team got back to basics this fall, refocusing on hard work, and fundamentals. That emphasis started week one in the weight room, with 6 a.m. strength and conditioning sessions every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Once November hit, we added a fourth day of workouts to truly maximize our strength.
Our strength Coach, Jeff Zuhlke is an amazing teacher and motivator. He took the time to breakdown and reteach the fundamentals and biomechanics of movement early this fall. This attention to detail is really starting to pay off in our strength output. I know many of our athletes had to take a few steps backwards, regarding their max out weights. Jeff is such a stickler for proper form and focus. Every rep has to be solid and clean or we don't add on weight. This rebuilding can be tedious and frustrating at first, but I'm certain everyone in our program would agree, that the method to Jeff's madness is finally paying off. Our overall team strength is up. Our squat and hang clean numbers this week featured personal records for our entire team. But more importantly, the confidence from all of the hard work, attention to detail and process focus, is obvious.
As we meet with our athletes to hear their plans for winter break and academic aspirations for GPA's and finals, I'm reminded of how special this group is. We are surrounded by some of the most driven, motivated, high achieving student-athletes in the country here at Wisconsin. Our Badger softball team is nothing shy of amazing. In addition to all the rigors of training and competing athletically all fall, we have student-athletes completing laboratory research projects, shadowing doctors, interning in business and preparing for post-graduate studies like the LSAT and MCAT. We are surrounded by renaissance women who are certain to become great leaders in the field of study and in their communities.
Our Wisconsin athletes not only "do well in the classroom", they "do good in the community". They are kind and caring. They are selfless. They give back. This commitment to not only self-improvement but also to social justice is what makes our Badger Softball team so special. I know the countless hours that the team has volunteered with local youth through the Ronald McDonald House, Goodman Community Center and local schools will make our community a better place while making our team more appreciative and compassionate.
