UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The 15th-ranked Wisconsin wrestling team wrapped up its weekend road trip, Sunday, visiting No. 1 Penn State, as the Badgers dropped all but two matches in a 36-7 defeat at the Jordan Center.
Â
Despite the lopsided loss, UW (1-2, 0-1) showed a few bright spots in its first conference meet of the season.
Â
Third-ranked
Isaac Jordan extended his streak of consecutive wins to 13 to begin the year with a last-second victory over Geno Morelli in the 165-pound match.
Â
Trailing, 4-2, with about 20 seconds left, Jordan escaped Morelli's hold and popped to his feet. The undefeated Badgers wrestler proceeded to aggressively lunge at his opponent before grabbing a hold of his legs and forcing to the ground to pick up a takedown as time expired.
Â
The 5-4 result marked Jordan's second-straight one-point win and fourth of the season.
Â
Wisconsin's other victory came in the heavyweight grapple, as
Brock Horwath handled Devon Van Cura in a 10-0 major decision. Other than his 16-0 domination of Jordan Festege in the Badger's first dual meet against UW-Whitewater, Sunday's triumph was Horwath's most dominant decision of 2015-16.
Â
In five of the seven other matches, Wisconsin wrestlers went up against Nittany Lions ranked in the top five of their respective weight classes.
Â
Rylan Lubeck and
Eric Peissig had the toughest tests, as the duo wrestled against No. 1-rated opponents.
Â
Zain Retherford pinned Lubeck at the 2:56 mark of the 149-pound bout, while Morgan McIntosh won, 7-1, over Peissig at 197 pounds.
Â
Fourth-ranked 125-pounder Nico Megaludis defeated
Johnny Jimenez, 11-3, by major decision.
Â
No. 15
Ricky Robertson was also beat by major decision (15-2), losing to fifth-ranked Bo Nickal in the 174-pound match.
Â
The final match featuring a ranked Penn State wrestler came at 157 pounds, as
TJ Ruschell was pinned at the 6:00 mark by No. 3 Jason Nolf.
Â
Kade Moss beat
Luke Rowh at 141 pounds (D 4-1) and Matt McCutcheon won over
Ryan Christensen at 184 pounds (MD 13-1) to round out the results.
Â
The Badgers forfeited the 133-pound match, as
Ryan Taylor was unable to take the mat on Sunday. Eighth-ranked Jordan Conaway was awarded the win.
Â
Wisconsin will take a two-week break before returning to the mat, Dec. 29-30, at Midlands.
