Wisconsin recognized for academic excellence

MADISON, Wis. -- Both the Wisconsin men's and women's cross country teams were honored this week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as 2014 Division I All-Academic teams, the organization announced Wednesday.
In order to receive this honor, each cross country team must have a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.00 or higher and must have started at least five runners at its respective NCAA regional championship.
The men's cross country posted a team cumulative GPA of 3.06 and reclaimed the NCAA Great Lakes Regional title this year, in addition to placing 10th at the NCAA championship. . The women's cross country team earned a team cumulative GPA of 3.17 and had a second place finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional and a 10th-place showing at the 2014 NCAA Cross Country Championship.
In addition, six athletes received individual USTFCCCA All-Academic awards for maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher finishing in the top-25 at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional or by earning All-America status at the NCAA championship meet.
Four of the six athletes came from the men's team, senior Michael Van Voorhis, freshman Carl Hirsch, sophomore Malachy Schrobilgen and sophomore Joe McAsey. Schrobilgen and Van Voorhis received the honor last year, while it marks the first time Hirsch and McAsey have been recognized for their work in the classroom.
The women's cross country team had two athletes to receive the individual honors, senior Gabi Anzalone and junior Molly Hanson. This is Anzalone's second USTFCCA All-Academic honor and Hanson's first.
