COLUMBUS. Ohio -- On Valentine's Day at the OSU Ice Rink, the No. 3 Wisconsin women's hockey team saw its hearts and eight-game unbeaten streak broken by Ohio State, as the Buckeyes defeated the Badgers, 4-3.
The loss snapped the Badgers' eight-game unbeaten streak in addition to Wisconsin's nine-game winning streak against Ohio State.
Fast Facts | • UW saw its eight-game unbeaten streak end | • Pankowski scored her team-leading 16th goal of the year | • Badgers return to action next Friday at 3 p.m. against St. Cloud State | |
After giving up a first period goal on an OSU rush, the Badgers tied the game at 1-1 midway through the second as junior defenseman Courtney Burke fired a rocket from the point past Danczak on Wisconsin's second power play of the game. It marked Burke's fourth goal of the season.
Ohio State retook the lead after converting on its own power play minutes later in the second, marking the first time Wisconsin has given up a power-play goal since Oct. 24, 2014. The Badgers had killed their opponents past 55 power plays prior to the OSU power-play tally.
Wisconsin responded as Mellissa Channell fired a shot from the top of the left circle past OSU goaltender Stacy Danczak to knot the game at two just as an Ohio State penalty expired.
However, Ohio State struck twice in the first 11 minutes of the third period to take a 4-2 advantage, scoring on a shorthanded goal before capitalizing on a UW miscue during even-strength action.
The Cardinal and White provided late-game drama, as freshman Annie Pankowski recorded her 16th goal of the season with 1:28 remaining as the Badgers had an extra attacker on the ice. The Badgers generated numerous chances in front of the net in the final minute, but couldn't force overtime.
"I thought we played OK," Wisconsin head coach Mark Johnson said. "At times we showed some desperation and played pretty well and other times we turned the puck over a little too much and they capitalized on the opportunities they had, especially in the third period on the short-handed goal. The fourth goal too, a couple mistakes that you make, and a lot of nights you can withstand them, but tonight the puck didn't really bounce in some situations like you want.
"At the end we had a couple good looks. You pulled goalie and score to make it 4-3 and then had the goalie still out, had a couple good looks, and came up a little bit short."
Sophomore netminder Ann-Renée Desbiens collected 19 saves in the defeat. Wisconsin outshot Ohio State 31-23.
"The lessons learned here is that we have to come out next Friday and play the way we finished the game," Johnson said. "You have to play with a desperation, especially this time of year when things are winding done. You don't want to make some mistakes and have it cost you your season and then your season's over. It's a good learning opportunity, we'll just take some things away from this game and certainly build on it and get ourselves ready for St. Cloud next weekend."
Wisconsin welcomes St. Cloud State to LaBahn Arena for the Badgers' final regular-season series. Faceoff next Friday is set for 3 p.m.
