MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin men's tennis team rebounded and got back to winning ways, defeating in-state rival Marquette, 5-2, at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on Wednesday.
With the victory, the Badgers extended their win streak against the Golden Eagles to 18-straight matches.
"It's exciting to get a win tonight over our in-state rival, Marquette," said head coach Greg Van Emburgh. "I felt like the guys played pretty solid overall. I was happy to get that doubles point and stop the streak of losing doubles points."
The Badgers started the match off strong by winning their second doubles point of the season with victories on courts 2 and 3.
On doubles court 2, Jakhongir Jalalov and Tomas Pitra jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back en route to a 6-3 win over Marquette's Daniel Fernandez and Andre Romanello.
Lamar Remy and John Zordani played through a back-and-forth contest on court 3, emerging victorious against Cameron Tehrani and Kristiyan Trukov, 7-5.
The No. 48 doubles pair of freshmen Jose Maria Martin De Oliva Carranza and Josef Dodridge was unable to finish out its match on court 1, but held a 5-4 lead at the time of its conclusion.
In singles play, Pitra swept his opponent, 6-1, 6-0, to earn UW its second point of the match. Fellow freshman Darius Mackenzie swept his MU foe, Trukov, in similar fashion, winning his first singles match of the season by a score of 6-3, 6-1.
Remy continued to display his dominant play and clinched the match for the Badgers with a comeback win over Marquette's Romanello, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. Dodridge rounded out the Wisconsin victories by beating his opponent, Dykema, in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
Despite playing into a competitive first set tiebreak, Alexander Kokorev was unable to pull out the win at No. 1 singles and fell by a score of 7-6 (8-6), 6-4. Jalalov also came up short versus his Golden Eagle challenger and dropped the match, 6-4, 6-2.
"It was important for us to get back on track as a team, and I think the guys should take this and get some confidence," said Van Emburgh. "They know where they're at and how they've been playing against top teams.
"We definitely want to use this as a momentum changer and take this into the next matches."
Freshman Lamar Remy echoed Van Emburgh's optimism following the rivalry win.
"It feels good getting our first home win of the season," Remy said. "We've had a pretty rough schedule playing a lot of ranked teams, and it's good to get ourselves on track before Texas next week."
The Badgers will have the weekend off before traveling to Texas for a pair of matches against SMU and No. 18 TCU on Feb. 28 and March 1.
