MADISON, Wis. -- The 11th-ranked Wisconsin volleyball team put its lethal attack on display to blank Georgia 3-0 in the Badger Classic at the UW Field House on Thursday night. The Badgers defeated the Bulldogs 25-11, 25-6, 25-15 to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Wisconsin hit a season-high .402 (45 kills - 10 errors - 87 total attempts), while Georgia hit just negative .052 (16-21-97), a season-low for a UW opponent.
"Like I told the team, it was hard to find too many things we didn't do well tonight," UW head coach Kelly Sheffield said. "I thought we played a pretty complete match."
Fast Facts | • Freshman Tionna Williams tied her career highs of six blocks and nine kills | • UW hit a season-high .402 (45 kills - 10 errors - 87 total attempts) | • Freshman and Alpharetta, Georgia, native Amber MacDonald recorded a match-high 14 digs, just one short of her career high. |

The Badgers came out firing to start the match. Led by sophomores Kelli Bates and Lauryn Gillis, and freshman Tionna Williams, the impressive Wisconsin attack was too much for Georgia to handle. After racing to a 12-4 lead, the Badgers forced a Georgia timeout, but there was no stopping the high-powered Wisconsin offense that hit .424 (16-2-33) in the set. To close out the set, Bates capped her noteworthy set performance with back-to-back kills, bring her set total to six putaways . With two service aces in the first set, Bates tied her career high within just minutes of the match starting.
Wisconsin continued to unleash on the Bulldogs in the second set. Two kills by Gillis and three Georgia attack errors put the Badgers up 5-0 right away, and the Badgers never looked back. A 15-0 run put the Badgers up 23-3, but three late Georgia kills extended the set. To close the set, freshman Julia Saunders notched her first career kill. UW upped its hitting percentage to .600 (17-2-25) and also added five blocks.
'It's just being able to go back to the service line and clear your mind, whether you've served one ball, five balls or 10," senior Taylor Morey said of the 15-0 run. "We work a lot on our in (the court) percentage and that's something that I try to take pride with, that my serve is served confident and in the court. And also during that run, our blockers were doing a great job, and like [Sheffield] said we were transitioning hard, so it made it easy to keep the run going when we were playing so clean. "
The final set followed the same story, as the Badgers forced a Georgia timeout after taking an 11-4 lead. The Bulldogs refused to give up, however, as Georgia managed to slow the Badger offense late in the set but would get no closer than 10 points (22-12). The Bulldogs called another timeout at 23-12 but two errors sealed the Badger victory.
Bates led with a match-high 14 kills, followed by Gillis with 12 and Williams tying her career-high with nine.
Once again, junior Lauren Carlini controlled the Badger offense with 33 assists. Carlini also added three kills, 10 digs and five blocks in an impressive display of versatility.
Amber MacDonald, a freshman out of Alpharetta, Georgia, tallied a match-high 14 digs, while Morey recorded 11.
Wisconsin outblocked Georgia 11-7 behind Williams' six blocks, which also tied her career high.
The Badgers continue play in the Badger Classic tomorrow night, facing Kent State at 7:30 p.m.
