MADISON, Wis. - The No. 9 Wisconsin women's track and field team kicked off the indoor season with a 73-62 win over Notre Dame at The Shell on Saturday afternoon.
The Badgers won nine of the 15 events which included strong performances from two All-Americans,
Georgia Ellenwood and
Kelsey Card.
"They are leaders, two veterans, and All-Americans" Coach
Mick Byrne said of Ellenwood and Card. "The rest of the team looks up to them. They've competed at a high level so they set the stage for the rest of the team."
Ellenwood had a strong start to the season by reigning supreme in both the 60-meter hurdles and the high jump with marks close to her personal bests.
The junior finished the hurdles in 8.81 seconds, only six-tenths of a second off from her personal best as well as having a clearance of five feet, nine-and-one-quarter inches in the high jump, only a half inch off her personal record.
Freshman
Emma Haugen also had a strong showing in the high jump to place second behind Ellenwood, respectively, with a clearance of 5-8.
Card swept both of her throwing events with a heave of 55-4 ¼ in the shot put as well as 66-8 ¾ in the weight throw.
Redshirt freshmen
Banke Oginni and
Kennedy Blahnik finished second and third, respectively, behind Card in the shot put with Oginni recording a personal best with a throw of 49-3 1/2.
Â
Oginni also finished second behind Card in the weight throw with another personal record 59-10 1/4.
In addition, Card participated in the discus throw exhibition which she won with an astounding throw of 196-0, which improved upon her previous personal best by over two meters.
Sophomore

Stand-out
Brenna Detra won the 600-meter run with a time of 1:33.81.
Emma Reifel took third with a personal best of 1:34.94 and
Lauren Holtz took sixth with a time of 1:40.66.
Michele Lee,
Colette Richter, and
Lianna Mack went 1-2-3 in the 3,000 meters with Lee recording a personal best time of 10:03.62.
Taylor Amann,
Jane McCurry, and
Claire Buck also went 1-2-3 in the pole vault with Amann clearing 12-10 ¾, McCurry with 12-0 ¾ and Buck earning a clearance of 11-7.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Detra, Reifel, Holtz, and Madison Smith took second with a time of 4:13.54.
In the long jump,
Casie Pawlik secured third place with a jump of 18-1 while Tiffany Ike took second in the triple jump with 37-1 ¼.
Despite this meet not featuring some of Wisconsin's top talent, Byrne was excited for the team to get back on the track and into the swing of competition season.
"It's nice to get on the spikes and get on the uniform and for some of the younger kids to get rid of the nerves…It's a great opportunity."
The Badgers next compete at Minnesota in a dual meet on Jan. 23.Â
