Badgers brave soggy conditions to place seventh through 36 holes of Marquette Invitational
RIVER HILLS, Wis. -- The Wisconsin men's golf team battled through hard rain and tough winds to sit in seventh place through 36 holes of the Marquette Invitational at the Milwaukee Country Club.
Â
The Badgers (297-285=582) bounced back from a long, rain-soaked first round to jump two spots up the leaderboard.
Â
"It was pretty miserable this morning because it rained pretty hard and it was windy on top of that," UW head coach Michael Burcin said. "The golf course was playing extremely long because it was so wet. So it was hard even though the greens were fairly soft. Today was certainly frustrating at times but for the most part the kids played really well all day so there is a lot to be excited about."
Â
Freshman Nick Robinson (69-72=141) shot a 1-under 69 to open the tournament and record a new career low. The Palos Verdes, California, native ended the day at 1-over to sit in a tie for ninth place and lead the Badgers. One stroke behind is sophomore Jordan Hahn (73-69=142), who is tied for 12th place after netting a 1-under 69 in the second round.
Â
At 6-over, senior Ben Skogen (75-71=146) is tied for 32nd place while junior Eddie Wajda (82-73=155) rebounded from a slow start in the first round to shoot a 3-over 73 in the afternoon and jump up to a tie for 56th place. Junior Johnny Decker (80-76=156) finished one stroke behind Wajda to tie for 59th place.
Â
Competing as individuals, freshman Pete Kuhl (78-70=148) and sophomore Brett Robinson (76-72=148) both finished the day at 8-over to sit in a tie for 39th place. Senior Tommy Schofield (80-72=152) recorded a 2-over 72 in the second round to jump seven spots up the leaderboard and tie for 52nd place.
Â
Northwestern leads the tournament after recording an even 560, while UCLA is two strokes back in second and Mississippi is at 4-over. Liberty (+11), SMU (+13) and Marquette (+15) round out the top six. The Badgers finished two strokes ahead of Northern Illinois (+24) and five ahead of Seton Hall (+27). Valparaiso (+53) ended the day in 10th place.
Â
"I think we're in a really good spot," Burcin said. "We have several kids that are in contention for top-20 finishes and some of our individuals played solid today so tomorrow will be fun. We will feel much more comfortable on the golf course so we're all really looking forward to getting back out there."
