EAST LANSING, Mich. – On the opening day of main draw play at Regionals, senior Maria Avgerinos walked away with the only win for Wisconsin.
In her first match of the tournament, Avgerinos faced Eastern Illinois' Kelly Iden, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Despite her early success, she fell to Notre Dame's Brooke Broda, 6-0, 6-4, in the Round of 32.
Senior Sydney Rider and freshman Christina Zordani suffered early setbacks to Noëlly Nsimba (Youngstown) and Ariadna Blinova (Akron), respectively. Rider posted a 3-1 record at the ITA Midwest Regionals and moves to 7-7 in her final Badger season. Â Â
Although the Badgers will no longer officially compete this weekend, they hope to continue play in extra singles matches tomorrow. Â
Up next, the Badgers will head to the FSU Invitational on Nov. 4-6 in Tallahassee, Fla. for their final tournament of the fall season.

EAST LANSING, Mich. – After fighting her way through the qualifying bracket, senior Sydney Rider advanced to the main draw of the ITA Midwest Regional on Friday. She will join fellow Badgers Maria Avgerinos and Christina Zordani as they begin singles play in the main draw bracket this weekend.
Rider dispatched Pauline Chawafambria of Northern Illinois, 6-4, 7-6 (4), giving her three wins already this tournament and securing her spot in the main draw.
Freshman Melissa Pick was not as fortunate, falling to Youngstown's Noëlly Nsimba, 6-3, 7-6 (6).
In doubles action, combos Kelsey Grambeau/Rider and Zordani/Avgerinos each won their first match of the day against their respective Eastern Michigan opponents. Grambeau and Rider defeated Anna Veleva and Renu Sharma, 8-2. Zordani and Avgerinos battled and overcame Ani Gogvadze and Maria Ribero, 8-7 (5).
However, both combos came up short in their second match. Grambeau and Rider fell to Illinois' Louise Kwong and Ines Vias, 8-2. Zordani and Avgerinos dropped an 8-1 decision to Northwestern's Erin Larner and Lee Or.
Sophomore Kendall Kirsch and Pick battled in their first doubles match, but they came up short to Western Michigan's Olivia Myers and Katja Fevralev, 8-5.
Main draws will begin Saturday for the Badgers.

EAST LANSING, Mich. – After a week off from competition, the Wisconsin women's team came ready to play this weekend at the ITA Midwest Regional Championship.
With four Badgers competing in the qualifying singles draw, senior Sydney Rider and freshman Melissa Pick proved they were up for the challenge. The duo each picked up a pair of wins in East Lansing, Mich. advancing closer to reaching the main draw.Â
Rider first faced Eastern Michigan's Andrea Martinovska and grabbed a 6-4, 7-5 victory. She then defeated Youngstown's Dominika Lackova, 6-3, 6-2, to advance to the sweet sixteen of the qualifying bracket.
Pick found similar success during opening day, knocking off Akron's Carli Knezevich, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (5). She then continued her run of success defeating Detroit Mercy's Anna Davydova, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 3-0.
Junior Kelsey Grambeau and freshman Michelle Linden also represented the Badgers in the qualifying draw. Grambeau fell in her first match against Bowling Green's Anna Koholdnaya, 6-1, 6-4. Linden started her morning strong overcoming Milwaukee's Labina Petrovska, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5). In her second match, she fought hard against Illinois State's Marcia Tere-Apisah, but came up short, falling 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
Doubles action for the Badgers begins tomorrow afternoon. Sophomore Kendall Kirsch and Pick will face Western Michigan's Olivia Myers and Katja Fevralev. Freshman Christina Zordani and senior Maria Avgerinos will go head-to-head against Eastern Michigan's Ani Gogvadze and Maria Ribero.
