FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. – In its first postseason competition of the year, the Wisconsin women's cross country team placed sixth at the 2016 Big Ten Cross Country Championship on Sunday morning.
Redshirt freshman
Amy Davis led the way for the Badgers, crossing the hilly Les Bolstad Course in 21 minutes, 34.5 seconds to finish 16th.
"I would say that I'm happy with it," Davis said of her individual finish. "But I feel like there's always that little inch or thing you find that you could improve on. I was two places away from being second-team all-conference, so I think that's just motivation for the next time I run."
Junior
Sarah Disanza, in her first cross country race since finishing runner-up at the 2014 NCAA Cross Country Championship, was the second Badger to finish in 21:49.2. Freshman
Alicia Monson was 30th in 22:09.6,
Michele Lee was 32nd in 22:13.5 while
Sarah Heinemann was 36th in 22:16.8.
In her first race since suffering an injury in September, sophomore
Shaelyn Sorensen, last year's Big Ten Freshman of the Year, was 49th in 22:35.2
Wisconsin scored 138 points to finish sixth in the team standings, while Michigan won the Big Ten team title with 63 points. Only 18 points separated fourth-place Minnesota from the Badgers.
"When you look at the score line, you could easily be disappointed," UW Director of Track and Field and Cross Country
Mick Byrne said. "But just like the men, we asked the women to go out there and fight for each other. We knew that Sarah and Shaelyn were certainly not at their best, but having them in there gave us some depth and those girls went out there today and competed.. There wasn't a whole lot of separating third through sixth in the team standings.
"At the end of the day, they fought, and they're just going to get better."
"I'm incredibly proud of how this team has come together and supported one another through their training and recovery practices," assistant coach
Jill Miller said. "They ran tough for each other today and we are all excited to have everyone healthy coming off of this race.
"We certainly aren't content with sixth-place, but took a step forward today and we are confident that we will can take another step forward during our preparation for the regional meet."
Davis led the Badgers off the get-go, settling into the chase pack behind race winner Erin Finn of Michigan, who claimed her third Big Ten crown in 20:37.3.
While Davis was towards the front of the pack, a group of Badgers consisting of Disanza, Monson, Lee, Heinemann and Sorensen ran close together, as the group was in the top-40 at the halfway point of the race.
Davis moved up to 14th with three kilometer to go, which would have earned the redshirt freshman All-Big Ten accolades, but a pair of runners snuck past Davis, who ultimately finished 16th.
"As a team, I think we did a pretty good job," Davis said. "We came out and executed to our best for the day. I think every race and every competition there is always room for improvement so I think we are ready to come back, train some more and bring it at regionals. Â
Up next for Wisconsin is its final home meet of the year, the 2016 NCAA Great Lakes Regional, on Nov. 12 at the Zimmer Championship Course.
"I'd say the Big Ten meet was a stepping stone for the team," Byrne said. "Again, it's just having the two women back in the fold, Sarah and Shaelyn, and it's going to give the others more confidence. There wasn't a lot separating our top five out there today.
"If we run like we did today at regionals, we have a shot."
