MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women's soccer team found success on Senior Day, honoring its senior class with a 1-0 victory over Iowa at the McClimon Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Â
"It feels great to win, it's been really nice how everyone worked hard for each other and we had a great celebration before the game and to win brings it all home and shows how much we care about each other and we are a team," senior defender
Holly Heckendorf said.
Â
Sophomore forward
Emily Borgmann came through with the game-winning goal for Wisconsin (6-4-5, 3-2-2) in the 62nd minute to lift the Badgers over the Hawkeyes (7-8-0, 1-6-0).
Â
Borgmann was able to punch in her fourth goal of the season inside the 18-yard box from an assist by senior midfielder
Micaela Powers, her fourth assist of the season.
Â
"Well I was one versus one in the corner and the girl was all over my back and I was about to turn around and get mad that they didn't call a foul but kind of just spun her," said Powers. "We talked at half time about playing behind their back line on crosses so I slid it back to the PK spot and Emily was there to finish."
Â
The Badger offense was dominant in the first half, keeping the ball in play on Iowa's side of the pitch for the majority of the period, but Iowa goalkeeper Claire Graves was clutch for the Hawkeyes, making four saves to keep the game scoreless heading into the half.
Â
Despite being down in the second half following Borgmann's goal, the Hawkeyes were not deterred as they put up a fight in the final five minutes of regulation, dominating possession and engaging in aggressive play.
Â
However, the Badgers' defensive front was too much for Iowa as they shut down every attempt the Hawkeyes made to tie things up.
Â
This marks the first home game this season that the team was able to secure a victory without going into overtime.
Â
Wisconsin's offense was stellar, outshooting Iowa 13-7 and having the advantage in shots on goal, 6-2.
Â
The Badgers completed the statistical sweep by earning nine corner kicks while the Hawkeyes only recorded three.
Â
Junior forward
Sydney McGinnis led the way for the Badgers, notching three shots, while Powers, Borgmann, junior midfielder
Alexis Tye, and freshman defender
Camryn Biegalski each pitched in two.
Â
Junior goalkeeper
Caitlyn Clem collected two saves on the day en route to her sixth shutout of the season while Iowa's Graves made five saves.
Â
The team hits the road next weekend, traveling to Ann Arbor to take on Michigan on Thursday at 6 p.m. CT before facing Michigan State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
