Wisconsin duo recognized after winning the Great Lakes Regional team title
MADISON, Wis. – After the No. 12 Wisconsin men's cross country team stole the show at the 2016 NCAA Great Lakes Regional, UW Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mick Byrne and junior Morgan McDonald have earned Great Lakes Region Coach and Athlete of the Year honors, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Tuesday.
Byrne, in his ninth year at Wisconsin, led the men to their 30th Great Lakes Regional crown in 45 years. Byrne has now collected six Great Lakes Regional Coach of the Year titles and 12 total regional honors throughout his career.
In addition to his regional honor, Byrne was awarded Big Ten Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year honors earlier this month after leading UW to the 2016 Big Ten Championship, edging out Michigan State by a mere three points.
McDonald finished runner-up at this year's regional meet, crossing the line with senior teammate Malachy Schrobilgen by his side in 30 minutes, 22.2 seconds. The duo paced the men's race all 10 kilometers, providing a one-two punch to help the Badgers secure the team title by 30 points.
The junior from Sydney, Australia also led the Badgers to the Big Ten team crown by earning the individual title as well. For his efforts, he was named the 2016 Big Ten Athlete of the Year. He was also named Big Ten Athlete of the Week twice after winning the Oz Memorial Invitational and crossing the line in third at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational.Â
No. 12 Wisconsin wraps up its season at the 2016 NCAA Cross Country Championship on Saturday at the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Indiana. The women's championship begins at 10 a.m. (CT), with the men toeing the line at 11 a.m.
