Christensen, Crone and Jordan take home tournament titles

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Ryan Christensen, Andrew Crone and Isaac Jordan each earned first-place finishes to lead the 17 members of the 11th-ranked Wisconsin wrestling team to a third-place team finish in the Wolfpack Open on Sunday in the Carmichael Gym.

In the 174-pound bracket, Christensen was a force to be reckoned with as he collected a 14-0 major decision, 3-0 decision and 15-0 technical fall to secure his spot in the semifinals. Christensen then recorded a 3-0 decision over North Carolina State's Nick Reenan, but it was his championship match against Duke's Connor Bass that showed off Christensen's impressive endurance. In a rematch from Friday's dual against Duke, Christensen came away with the victory yet again after winning the tie-breaker.

Three decisions and one pin at 3:36 propelled 149-pounder Crone to the semifinal. Up against Sam Speno of North Carolina State, a thrilling sudden victory decision gave Crone the 7-5 win and spot in the championship match. A 5-0 decision over Air Force's Gerald McGinty sealed Crone's second tournament title of the season.

165-pounder and second-ranked Jordan recorded three-straight pins in just 1:06, 0:56 and 1:05 to cruise to the title. In the semifinals, Jordan earned an 8-1 decision over Alex Lopouchansck of Air Force before securing a 14-5 major decision victory against Gardner-Webb's Tyler Marinelli to take home the title. He collected the second-most falls in the tournament with his three falls in 3:07. Jordan also had the most team points of any wrestler in the tournament with a total of 25 points.

Competing in the 197-pound bracket, Ricky Robertson collected a pin at 3:27, an 8-1 decision and a 15-0 technical fall to earn a spot in the championship match. Wrestling against North Carolina State's Peter Renda, Robertson took second place with a 3-2 decision in a tight match.

Two Badgers earned third-place finishes. In the 125-pound bracket, Jens Lantz lost a tough semifinal match against West Virginia's Matthew Schmitt with a 3-2 decision, but bounced back with a 6-2 win over North Carolina State's Tommy Cox. 141-pounder Cole Martin tallied two pins to get to the semifinal, but suffered another 3-2 decision loss against American's Jack Mutchnik. In the third-place match, Martin retaliated with a thrilling pin of North Carolina's Ac Headlee at 9:00.

Hunter Ritter picked up two wins to advance to the quarterfinal, but was pinned at 6:58 by Gardner-Webb's Hunter Gamble. To earn fifth place, Ritter got his hand raised three more times by collecting two major decisions and one pin of Lehigh's Chris Weiler at 1:44.

133-pounder Eli Stickley finished in sixth place. After losing in the quarterfinals by Jamal Harris of North Carolina State's sudden victory win, Stickley rebounded by picking up a sudden victory triumph of his own over Virginia's Micky Phillippi with a 5-2 decision. In the fifth-place match, Stickley suffered a 3-2 loss by decision against American's Esteban Gomez-Rivera.

Finishing in eighth place, 125-pounder Michael Cullen recorded a pin over Virginia's Louie Hayes in 1:08 and a 20-5 technical fall over Isaac Dinette. In the consolation semifinals, Cullen dropped a match to Duke's Thayer Atkins with a 4-2 decision. 197-pounder Eric Peissig also finished in eighth place after picking up three decision wins, but was ultimately pinned by American's Jeric Kasunic in the consolation semifinals.

Luke Rowh (141), Gabe Grahek (149), Jared Scharenbrock (157), Izaec Quintanilla (157), Santonio Cathery (174), Jacob Stilling (174) and Ben Stone (285) also competed in the tournament but did not place.

The Badgers had the second-most falls in the tournament (12), behind Gardner-Webb who had 13. UW led all teams with the most falls and technical falls in the least amount of time, collecting 17 in 60:51.

North Carolina State placed first with 635 match points while Air Force finished second with 519 match points. Wisconsin rounded out the top three with 457 match points. UW had the third-highest winning percentage in the tournament with 60 wins and 24 losses (.714).
