MADISON, Wis. — After leading the Badgers to a 10-2 regular-season record, including a 7-2 mark in the Big Ten and the West Division title, Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst was named Hayes-Schembechler Coach of the Year by a vote of the league's coaches, the Big Ten announced on Tuesday. Chryst is the third UW coach to be named Big Ten Coach of the Year, joining Barry Alvarez (1993 and 1998) and Bret Bielema (2006), both of whom earned the Dave McClain Coach of the Year award.
In addition, the Big Ten announced its All-Big Ten selections on the defensive side of the ball, and in an illustration of the depth of UW's defense, 11 different Badgers earned honors. Wisconsin ranks among the top 10 in the country in interceptions (first), scoring defense (third), rushing defense (third), third-down defense (third), pass efficiency defense (fifth), total defense (seventh), turnovers gained (eighth) and first downs allowed (10th).
Junior outside linebacker T.J. Watt led the way, earning consensus first-team All-Big Ten honors. Watt ranks second in the conference with 9.5 sacks and tied for seventh in the league with 13.0 tackles for loss. Senior cornerback Sojourn Shelton, who is tied second in the Big Ten and eighth in the country with 16 passes defended and tied for fifth in the league with four interceptions, was a first-team All-Big Ten choice by the media and a second-team selection by the coaches.
Another senior, outside linebacker Vince Biegel, earned second-team honors from the coaches and third-team from the media. This is the third season in a row Biegel has been named All-Big Ten after earned second-team honors from the media as a sophomore and consensus third-team laurels last year.
UW's starting safeties, senior Leo Musso and junior D'Cota Dixon, both earned third-team All-Big Ten distinction from the media and honorable mention by the coaches. The duo, both in their first full seasons as starters, have combined for nine interceptions and rank third and fifth on the team in tackles, respectively. Musso also was named Wisconsin's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree. Also in the secondary, junior cornerback Derrick Tindal was a consensus honorable mention All-Big Ten pick.
All three of the Badgers' starting defensive linemen were recognized by the Big Ten. Junior Conor Sheehy earned third-team honors from the coaches and honorable mention from the media. Classmates Alec James (coaches) and Chikwe Obasih (consensus) were also named honorable mention All-Big Ten.
At inside linebacker, sophomore T.J. Edwards, the Badgers' leading tackler, earned honorable mention honors from the both the coaches and media. Junior Jack Cichy, who was leading UW in tackles before sustaining a season-ending injury against Iowa on Oct. 22, was also a consensus honorable mention All-Big Ten choice.
